Learning to live with battle scars

A few days ago I posted on my local facebook watch group worrying about my first scratch on the top lug of my favorite blue Willard.  I was a bit down and I put this back in my watch box for a few days.  I have beater watches and older scratched up pieces in my collection that I don’t mind getting scratched at all.  It’s just that this blue Willard is my all-time favorite Seiko.

One of the members of the group told me that the scratches shouldn’t lessen my level of enjoyment. Yesterday I took this out of the watch box and wore it and I did thoroughly enjoy my day knowing I‘ve got on one of my all time favorite watches on my wrist.

First scratch / ding always hurts but after that it gets wayyy easier. Especially when the watch is a toolwatch such as this awesome lil Willard you have. An unscratched Seiko diver is not very inspiring sight in my opinion, lol.

I hear you Danny, that first ding just stung a bit lol 😅

I work with heavy equipment so I know how this feels. I could either not wear nice watches or wear them as intended. I don’t abuse my watches but the wabi created by the work environment is now a lesser concern.

We all know the feeling and it certainly stings, but can’t let it take away from a great watch the enjoyment it gives you.

Yes, thank you for this, I’ve heard this comment from a fellow collector as well.  Level of enjoyment is indeed the most important part of this great hobby of ours.  👍🏼

The more hacked up they are the better they look.  This guy was going around a couple of years back. Once the owner ground the burrs off, it looked amazing.

Totally get you.

My missus clattered my ChronOris with a bike when we were on holiday last week and put a great big scratch in the case. 💔

Totally ruined the first day of my break. To her credit, she picked up on my mood and offered to pay whatever Oris would charge to refinish/re-case it.

But I checked it again today and a week on, it doesn't look quite as bad...

put the watch in a box for 2 months and tell your wife it will cost 100 dollars.   then buy yourself a steak and a beer at the local pub to properly mourn your loss
