Review- Casio's closest Gshock looking model, the WS1700H. New 2/17/24 Update due to QC issue.

Update 2/17: thx to GoatReviews on youtube for alerting us all, but my Dual Time feature doesnt set PM times at all. Reached out to Casio. Lets see how they resolve this. Better get your QC standards better Casio! Scores went down due to the faulty time piece.

Original post: I'm not a practiced reviewer, I'm just a regular guy who loves watches especially Casios. And I know there are a lot of Casio-heads here on WC so for those looking for a GShock look but at a Casio price point, here's the one. To start I have plenty of Casio's and I thought the WS-1400H, or WS2100, or even W737 was in my humble opinion the closest to a GShock look without infringing on it, but this new beauty takes the top prize. In all of its chunky, squared goodness this all-resin (except the pushers) will find a lot of wrist time if you want that G look or G asthetic. Tide graph and Moon phase capable it will take the place of my old WS1300H which wasn't as pleasing to my eye. This however checks the boxes if you like a tacti-Cool look without breaking the bank, although missing shock resistance and legit GShock toughness. Other misses are the some-what dim screen legibility and that silly ani-digi clock is worthless so the design mapping could have been better used with the moon and tide info being more prominent. So far in the USA Casio website it comes in three colorways so black, khaki, and the one I chose in gray. I hear they are selling well so I'm glad I grabbed one for about $50 and will hope for more colors later in this format like white, dark green or even yellow. It runs on a 10-year battery with module 3562, and at 100 meters, the water resistance is plenty. The unguarded steel push buttons are tucked away but I wonder if they can be pressed accidently, only time will tell. The resin glass seems somewhat protected with it recessed a bit and lower, not flush, so a good thing there, still another point for a real GShock.

All together though, what a package from Casio at a mere pittance of a G, and almost merging whole-heartedly and unmistakenly into rarified GShock territory.

  • Rugged good looks. A pleasing and tough look.
  • 100m water resistance, light yet sturdy.
  • Affordable costs for a feature packed watch: tide graph and moon phase.
  • LCD screen is lighter than I prefer.
  • Digi-analog clock displayed on upper right has poor legibility.
  • Faux rivets on face ate ornamental and meaningless.
  • Metal pushers are in the open and it could be pressed accidently.
  • Poor QC, faulty module that doesnt allow for Dual Time setting in the PM.

Interesting review. Must admit I am not a fan of the faux rivets on this. On looks alone though it is a pretty cool looking G-Shock 💪

I could do w/o the rivets, but love the look nonetheless.

I dont know one person who likes those🤔

I wonder if you could do some modding by drilling out the plastic rivets and screwing in some shallow chrome screws? Or maybe that would end up looking janky....If I picked one up when the price comes down I'd be tempted to try it

Are the buttons easy to operate? I know you have to use a fingernail on some casios.

Also, can the MM/DD format be reversed to DD/MM? Some newer casios have this option now.

The metal buttons are easy for me to press down. Thats fine for me. I cannot switch the date on mine to read DD/MM. I bought mine from the Casio USA site so not sure it can be adjusted that way on the one I have. I only see the MM/DD that goes to 12 and 31 respectively.

Dont rush out to buy. The Dual Time function cannot be set to PM or afternoon/eveing times on my watch. Heard others are receiving this module malfunction. Hold off on buying. Reached out to Casio. Lets see how Casio customer service fixes this for me.

Great, insightful review - thx!🤙

Interesting flaw you found! Out of curiosity what step fails to work when trying to set the dual time?

  1. Press C to enter the Dual Time Mode (page EN-8).

2. In the Dual Time Mode, hold down A until the DST setting starts to flash, which indicates the setting screen.

3. Press C to move the flashing in the sequence shown below to select the other settings. Graphic removed.

4. When the setting you want to change is flashing, use B and D to change it as described below. Graphic removed.

5. Press A to exit the setting screen.

• The DST indicator on the Dual Time Mode screen indicates that DST is turned on for the Dual Time

Actually @GOATReviews alerted me to it and I, too, like many sent theirs back to Casio. They said they cant fix and admitted the faulty module in the production run of the new watch (imagine that- crazy). So Casio USA HQs offered me a replacement Casio of similar value/functionality and I already had many of the ones they offered. So I kept the defective DT function-watch. Oh well Casio is certainly not god-tier, things happen and no one's perfect. https://youtube.com/shorts/BuEOMsybODE?si=ISZ5savkdecZ38By

I guess I differ on the tiering since Casio is at the top of most of my mental lists but everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and yours is fully valid. No one and no company is perfect

We are agreeing. No one is perfect certainly not a company that pushes out product that is faulty. Poor QC from Casio. They can do better - maybe too "fat and happy" from their Cash Cow position in the market.

Thanks for the shoutout Carson @Valor70.86 👌

Adding in my 2 cents - the WS-1700H is aside from this issue, a great watch that became one of my favourites to wear amongst my collection.

For many people, Dual Time is not a commonly used feature and so the issue isn’t a big deal - but I can absolutely understand why there is a divide, as to some people, it is.
