Seiko Samurai Review

There is a time when we a #watchenthusiast must expand our wing, influence or infecting someone to get into watch collecting. here come mr S as one of my friend. mr S is a young die hard car guy that love japanese car. he owns a few g shock but havent got into mechanical movement yet. so i thought seiko will fit into his character

he often compliment about my orient kamasu but he dont want to buy something like mine so i offered him a seiko samurai. mr S has a bigger wrist than mine and seiko turtle isnt really work for his taste. and i played with it for a while.

from the case design i think it has a unique character especially from the side, it has a subtle line that i havent encountered from the other watch. most of the case has brushed finishing. diametre is 43,8mm it is too big for a man with a small wrist.

Image

bezel has a unidirectional click which is quite hard for my taste but it is quite good and didnt wobble alot. bezel insert is made from aluminium, and i like the indices.

dial has a square patern remind me of waffle pattern. and the colour isnt as black as i want it to be, it has some grey colour in it. lume is made from lumibrite from seiko.

movement is 4r35 it is the same movement as nh35. 41 hours power reserve and 21600 vph it is quite standart for a entry level dive watch but no problem at all. hacking and handwinding feature with date windows. crown is big and easy to use

bracelet is a think i dont really like about this watch. it has a nice solid end link and oyster style bracelet with a brushed finishing. to be honest i dont like the brushed feeling in this watch, it feel to rough for my taste and eventhough it is a solid link i feel light and cheap. it is a common problem with watch with this price range but it is what it is.

in the end i hope he like his first mechanical watch keep it for a long time. it is not my favourite choice but i feel it will served him well. So do you have a samurai? just let me know how you feel about it

I have a Samurai and i agree with the bracelet part. (Never been Seiko’s strong side)

The watch is solid and a good way to enter the mechanical watch world.
hope your friend is happy with his new watch!

I think your review of the Seiko samurai is splendid. You made fair points and I would agreed that the cost saving is in the bracelet. The bracelet even though functional can still be improved in the clasp design and finish. I like and notice that Seiko takes the time to produce visually interesting and distinctive dials of lately. I myself have the padi and same black waffle texture version in my collection.

Samurai's fit great onto a Barton Elite silicon rubber strap, you can match the dial colours too!

I have heard of Barton straps from YouTube but never owned one. I have to take a look thanks for the suggestion.

I also have a Seiko Samurai, in fact, just like yours.  I did find that Islander Watches was offering an upgraded bracelet that matches so I splurged and purchase one.  Fits like a glove, very tight tolerances and is a far better match in quality to the build of the Samurai.  Seiko should take notes.
