Would you wear a Vintage Watch Daily?

Good morning / evening / night watchfam do you have experience with a vintage watch before? a few month ago i got a chance from my friend who have a few vintage watch collection to borrow one of his collection for a few days which is this junghans trilastic small second 16 jewels.

Image

this watch is 33mm probably built on 1950 or 1960. it is a dress watch with small second hand with arabic numeral indices which remind me of some orient bambino small second variant (come to think about it orient must be taking inspiration from one of these particular model). built quality is different from today standart, watch feels light and im really afraid to broke the movement when winding it. crystal made from acrylic, and the strap leather have seen better day.

Image

it is cool to have a vintage watch collection for me, but to wear it everyday im not so sure. im too afraid to broke it at some point, for me it is better to wear vintage reissued watch than a real one. so do you have a vintage watch? whats your experienced you got so far? and would you wear it daily or just occasionally? cheers

I'm with you.  I'd be deathly afraid of breaking anything!

I exclusively wore my vintage Hamilton electrics for years. Great watches except you never knew when the battery was going to give up the ghost. You have to send the watch out to a specialist to replace the battery and wait a few weeks to get it back. If you're unlucky you'll find out it needs a service which is about $300 each time.

The worst part of wearing daily was the inevitable banging your wrist on a chair that someone left in the wrong place in the room and cracking or scratching the impossible to replace asymmetric crystal 😠

I even had a crystal fall off on a rare Hamilton Thor reference - needless to say that watch still doesn't have a replacement crystal.

I'm much happier now with mixing my vintage watches with modern watches and sticking to mechanical watches or solar quartz watches.

However, this all original 1950s Hamilton Ventura electric is still my absolute favorite watch of all time:

If you track my wruw you will note that I wear my vintage watches in regular rotation. My travel buddy is a 1960s Talis Skin Diver, I’ve taken her everywhere from -35 to +35*C and 110% humidity ( she didn’t like that one as much). Watches are meant to be worn, otherwise why buy them right.

Nice watch and really great shots! I have several vintage watches but I wear them when I know my day will be quiet with no physical activity and the weather is nice. I like winding them but yes I am still anxious to break something when I do.

I’ve had them break, sure. The casualty list varies.
My 1970s Oris ChronOris Cal.725 is currently the highest ranking casualty. Won’t wind or run.

The Albion world timer I recently picked up needs a service, it works but it does stop every now and then.

These two are completely f****d, the Delta particularly as it needs a mount for within the case. The Vertex needs stripping down.

I have this Gruen and a Buren Grand Prix that have damaged crown stems, so also need a fix. This is the worst it’s been for a while, usually I‘m running with a full working collection.

Stuff happens, but just get them fixed and roll with it.

I wear a vintage watch nearly every day.  I almost never wear the same watch on consecutive days.  For about five years I had a three watch rotation.  It was not good to my Omega.  I did horrible things to the acrylic crystal.  The downside of wearing any vintage watch in heavy rotation is that eventually it will quit on you.  I haven't been able to wear my Omega since October, which is why I don't throw a picture of it on WC.   I have five at various watchmakers and five waiting to go.  I think that the key to wearing vintage as a daily driver is sufficient volume.

I was wearing vintages daily before the pandemic when I go to the office every day. It just really depends on the watch you're wearing.

First of all that under the radar Junghans Trilastic is a rougher than you think 😀. It has the caliber J93, 693.81 to be precise. It a very robust utilitarian no non-sense movement. Junghans were Kings at manufacturing those to stand the stress of time. If the watch is serviced, go for it, ware it daily 👍.

Ofcourse, wearing a Vintage Watch is like being with a lady that you love. You acknowledge her each and every time. You hold her hand during walks, when it rains you hold the umbrella for her, you open the car door so she can get in etc...basically being a gentleman. That is how Vintage Watches have to be worn, daily but acknowledging their value with care⌚😊😉.

If I had it serviced and pressure tested? Absolutely. Vintage datejust on a beat-up leather strap just oozes cool. That or a vintage gold seamaster on a solid gold beads of rice bracelet 🤤
