Film protection for your watch

First of all please dont judge me for doing this  lol. so we as a watch owner normally would like to keep our collection as pristine as posible, but for everyday use of course scratch is inevitable. i dont mind a little scratch on my watch and learn to live with it, but i always try to wear it carefully to minimize the damage.

now there are some watch shop in my country which do the tpu wrapping for a watch (case, bracelet, crystal). they do a good job but i think the price is a little too much for collection of affordable watch (500-600$). also i think i just need a film protection for the crystal especially a watch without saphirre glass which is my hesalite speedy and hardlex seiko srpg for a "piece of mind".

Image

so a few days ago i'll visit one of my friend which has a small collection of watch while he's installing a tempered glass for his new prx. omg, they do that? i thought they just produce that for smartwatch. and he explained to me that he find a local shop that produce custom tempered glass and hydrogel (some sort of film) for whatever size you ask. and he told me its just cost 3$ for 2 film. so i guess im gonna try the hydrogel option.

because speedy and srpg have a domed crystal i thought it would be imposibble to cover all of the crystal, so i reduced the overall diametre for 2mm. it wouldn't cover all surface but it still good for me.

after 3 days the package came, and inside the package there are:

  1. 2 protective films

  2. 2 wet and dry wipes

  3. 1 card (for pushing the buble)

  4. 2 sticker for removing the dust

usual stuff just like you find on the phone film protection. and here is the result (im afraid there would be a bubble on the center crystal of the speedy because it has omega logo in it, but it turned out pretty well)

after a few days you probably forget that you installed this film lol. so what do you guys think, is it necessary to do this or im just out of my mind? lol, cheers

My opinion would be that the protective covering is either softer than what it covers or more brittle. Watch crystals are not expensive or delicate enough to warrant this. Watch crystals are like a car windscreen. If you can't polish it out, it can be fairly economically replaced.

Thats true, i dont know why it bothers me lol. But do they made all kind of dome crystal replacement too?

I will wear my watches carefully without protection firm, if it’s scratch i will live with that or if look to bad i will send to watchmaker to service and make it new again 😌

I'm sure they are available but admittedly this starts getting tricky for the amateur to source accurately. It tends to require going through some chart with measurements to get a part number. I was able to find a new crystal for a high dome rectangular crystal for a 1950's Bulova, and I thought that would be a lost cause.

Good to know, thx for the info. So where did end up buying this bulova crystal?

I think once I had the part number I found it cheapest on eBay. The interesting thing is that the whole cross-reference thing proved that most of these things are not model-specific. I'm sure there are a few proprietary crystals here and there but generally it's sourced standard parts.

This may be one of the better suppliers just to see the disarming variety available.

Actually they have a little article on the nuisance of selection as well.

Not sure for the speedy, but for Seiko Hardlex : my year 2000 orange monster looks like it was run over by a bus.

Solid patina of scratches everywhere with a few doozies in the bezel. But the hardlex look brand new, not a mark on it.

I’m super impressed by the scratch resistance of hardlex

First of all, never start your post "First of all, don't judge me". Because you WILL be judged. And not only judged, but considered, communicated with, and commented upon. Spurned and accepted. Ridiculed and complimented. Every letter in every syllable will be under the microscope or at least a watch loupe, because you're dealing with the most opinionated fringe of a fringe activity. I even include myself. I especially include myself. I'm not speaking for everybody, but it's the only reason I'm here. To judge and be judged. By actual watch guys, and even a few women, so if the jury finds me guilty, it's at least a jury of my peers. Anybody on the site can have any wristwatch opinion they want, none of it means much of anything, and that's how I like it. "A little nonsense now and then/Is relished by the wisest men" etc., etc.

The Bible says we must not judge. But there are no watches in the Bible. I read the whole thing just to make sure there weren't. Okay, okay, that wasn't the only reason I read it. And spoiler alert: the ending wasn't pretty.

So please judge this response, or anything I put on here. And I will return the favor by judging you. I'd do it now, except I'm too tired after posting all this drivel.

EDIT Have now read the post. Judgment rendered: Good post, interesting comments.

My little Seiko 5 SNK375 was flung off of a bathroom vanity and skidded face down across a textured tile floor. No hardlex damage.

My little diva Seiko 5 SNKK87 came off the strap and fell face down on a hardwood floor. No hardlex damage.

So confused! I think it’s a comedic response, since it made me laugh, Am I right? 🙂

Online chats are always lacking facial expression and tone of voice, so sometimes funny seems serious, and vice versa.

And if I state an opinion about a watch and you judge it, I will be grateful you took the time to do it, and even more grateful if I learn something from what your judgment is.

Hello FW. Thank you for reading the response, and I'm guessing Edwin is also grateful you read his post. I'm glad my response made you laugh because that was the main intention of it. But the humorous (?) tone is to make a serious point, and I am very rarely serious about anything on WatchCrunch. WatchCrunch is where I come to get away from seriousness. But the serious point is that this is still a place on the Internet you can go where you can post any crazy opinion or any crazy watch photo, and anybody can weigh in however they want. I'm always going to stick up for that, and if it ever starts to go the other way, then I'll be off the site.

I would say that I was sorry about the confusion, but in addition to encouraging judgment at all times on WatchCrunch, I also believe we should NEVER APOLOGIZE!!! (3 exclamation points, so you know that's serious). Although I don't welcome it, anybody can be as rude to me or my comments as they want. The idea that I'm going to worry about what some guy in Scotland or Albania thinks about something I wrote on the internet is not only humorous, that's HIGH comedy.
