Smartify your watch?

I have Instagram forcing ads for this thing down my throat at the minute and wanted to know what you guys think about this concept?

https://www.ganance.com/product/ganance-heir-reservation

https://www.instagram.com/wearganance?igsh=MXhqMjlteTh6bTNhcg==

The company is Ganance and the device is called the Heir and the basic idea is you wear it underneath a conventional watch and it acts as a fitness tracker and sends information to your phone.

I get the idea and can see this being the perfect solution for some people (if it's actually good!)

but I don't think its for me, if I wanted a smart watch I think I would just dual wield 😂

My first concern was magnetism but checked their Insta and they have confirmed it's not magnetic.

Thoughts?

But why though? I had the exact same response but I don't know why 😂

I think because the whole reason we love watches is because they are unconnected to anything but they are still powered by only our daily movement (or battery) and it's sole purpose is to tell the time but as a byproduct of us wearing them all the time, they hold memories. Putting that thing on the back of a watch is like a parasite on the belly of a shark 😂

·

Let’s see, I run 4 miles, stretch, do an hour workout, and walk the dog for 45 minutes, why do I need a device to tell me that?

All display casebacks just got WRECKED

If I wanted a watch that tracked my every move, I'd just wear a smart device, honestly. If I needed that for health reasons, I'd get the apple ultra as the sensors are undoubtedly better grade.

I wear "dumb" watches (you know what I mean lol) because I don't want to be tracked. I find that an immense source of stress. So what if I got 9,997 steps instead of 10,000? I'm still moving and doing what I need to do. I know if I work out hard by the way I'm sweating bullets. I don't care if my heart rate spiked to 160 or 155.

Unless, as I said, there's a medical reason to know that. Then Apple Ultra.

Utterly contemptible 😤

Yeah, would have thought the magnetic field from it wouldn't be great for owt that's not METAS.

·

Also, does it stick to your caseback with adhesive? What about when you need it serviced?

Just a huge no for me.

I did say in the post it's not magnetic 😅

Please with my oura ring so far. Seems like a better solution for the WIS

I think is just a rubbery texture that keeps it in place, I don't think you have to adhear it to your watch or anything.

All the videos show them charging the thing on its own not attached to a watch

Ah, was in such a hurry to express my disgust I clearly didn't read properly! Sorry.

Still hate it though 😜👍🏻👍🏻

Lawsuits inbound....

I can read the headline's now...."NYC city has banned smart watch suction cup thingies for real watches after a rash of teenagers decided to do Tik Tok challenges involving eating them. This is reminiscent of the great Tide pod challenge of '18..." IFYKYK. 🤣

I really hope this doesn't happen and it's kind of hard to prevent this! The best I can think of is to put something on the label like "Not intended for children under 12" or something like that. Open to other suggestions Image

The WR of this thing is listed as splash proof and not submergable at all

Definitely not meant for submersion. Rather regular day-to-day usage, hand washing and exercise should be just fine.

Dual wielding with a low profile activity band (rather than full smartwatch) is the way to go in my book.

All a matter of personal taste. Sleek watch!

I agree with @Stephenl , this one is probably snakeoil.

They tried this in a couple of times over the last decade...

So this deserves negative attention, but the amount of pearl-clutching & derision every time a "smart" device pops up on this forum is a bit much...

Don't like it? Perfectly fine, say so and move on. But you're not smarter than the next guy just because he likes/has a use-case for the tech.

It was a novel idea to me when I first started working on this but clearly there have been previous attempts at solving the same problem. Most of them from a decade ago. My take on that is that the timing wasn't right. In 2014/2015, smartwatches/activity trackers were just catching on and people were still curious about their potential.

Now, after a decade of wearables throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks, I think we're convinced that it's useful to have some of our data but maybe we don't need another screen fighting for our attention and sending more distractions.

We're hoping to find that balance of honoring traditional watches while adding just enough of the tech.

I have my watch on left wrist n stepper on my right, its a good idea imo, if it was thin enough i can imagine it doing well. Not against it

It's 3mm in height and the feedback we're getting from beta users is that they forget they're wearing it - it's non-intrusive at all!

·
Mare0104

Why? So many problems, who thinks of these things? Watch companies spend $$$ to slimmer the case and then we will stick this monstrosity to the back of the watch? To make it thicker and cover see trough caseback for what we pay more? Yea right, good luck.

Good points. We definitely thought of the caseback issue. You have to take your watch off to show the display caseback and our product pops right off when you want it to in the same motion so we think you'll still be able to show it off without any issues.

As far as the height is concerned, our device is 3mm so it's fairly unnoticeable until you start getting into the extremely slim cases.

All depends on how thick it is. I'll check, looks a bit more convenient for my case instead of the smart rings (which are really not that smart and accurate).

I've posted a few #WRUW with the Heir under my watches, check it out! It's only 3mm and the feedback we're getting is that it blends right in and people forget they're wearing it

I Schwarzkopf when I feel a smartwatch is appropriate. But this is an interesting concept. Doesn't seem Nato friendly.

NATO is definitely a tricky one but not impossible. Maybe someone here has a connection to a watch strap company who we could collaborate on designing a band?

·

Damn now that clicked the link am I going to be stuck getting a million ads from them?

I'll try my best not to let them get spammy! The Meta algorithm has a mind of its own

I bought a near-identical device several years ago and loved it for the month it worked before the company went under, stopped supporting the software, and it was no longer compatible with the latest iOS. I think this is still a solid idea that solves the biggest problems with smart watches (ugly, generic, disposable) and brings some sensible tech to your existing collection. But this needs to come from a company that’s stable. Really, this is what swatch should be offering or TAG instead of their stupid/overpriced/oversized “connected” watches

If you have a connection that could help us get acquired, that would be much appreciated! :)

·

I think I got to all the questions. Please connect with me and share any feedback and input you may have. Let's build this together!

·

Also, if anyone is in the Chicago area, we have an event next month at the Breitling Boutique on Michigan Ave. Come check out the product in person! We'll be announcing another one in NYC for late May

Sorry but 3mm is not fairly unnoticeable, don't know what made you think that. 14-15mm watch is a no go for many buyers and we rarely see sub 11mm watches on the market. As I said you vastly underestimate the thickness issue, especially if watch is worn on nato which adds another 1-2mm or even more ( despite beta users claims ) and kills the measuring functionality as there is no touching with skin, therefore limiting my options. If I want a sport watch I will wear my sport watch and not stick this on my diver to make it 16mm high for my afternoon jogging. Not to mention the design aspect, every watch has different side case design that will clash with your puck.

Anyway wishing you all the best with this project but I don't see a sucess story here, let alone scalable business.

You are not solving any problem with this solution ( maybe even causing one with thickness ), vast majority of watch nerds use analog watches and switch to digital sport watches when active. The functionality of this puck is severly inferior to any decent sport watch like Garmin, Apple, Sunto ... and I don't see a use case of needing such rudimental data of tracking, let alone naming it health tracking.

Not trying to be rude, just laying out my oppinion ( as OP asked for ).

The product has no magnets. Your watch is more likely to become magnetized resting it on your phone than with our product

Fair enough.

Good luck with your product, but I think it's not going to appeal to the majority of traditional watch buyers as we choose deliberately not to have a smart watch & technology.
