I went through that grade!
I’ll never forget how unsettling it was to have my Dad, who had always pushed me academically, tell me to relax and enjoy the end of high school. Prior to that, whenever my brother or I would ask for homework help that he considered excessive, he’d chant, “I went through kindergarten. I went through first grade…” until he reached the grade we happened to be in at the time. Then he’d go back to watching “Hawaii 5-0.”
When I’d call him from college or med school to complain about my coursework, he’d reply empathetically with “Better you than me.”
In that spirit, I’m bailing on #1wc today. My amazement at the eloquence of those who submitted essays is surpassed only by the impact of the realization that I don’t have to do the homework at all.
That is incredibly freeing, and I’m availing myself of the off-ramp, as the nightmares that I’m back in college being chased by the Dean trying to reclaim my diploma don’t apply here.

As much as I invoked my Dad, I’m equally reminded of a book we read to our kids called “A Squash and a Squeeze.” The premise is that someone who thought their house was too small was made to realize how roomy it actually was by filling it with ever larger farm animals and then evicting them one by one. Evicting 1WC, which I brought into my life voluntarily, makes the space therein feel somehow bigger than it was on day 1WC-1. Silly, but true.
