Clue was “What always has time on its hands?”
Five letters.
I guessed “clock.”
I was wrong.
So ashamed…

You are correct, Sir. “Clock” wasn’t inherently a bad guess, just not the first thing a WCer should have come up with!
Indeed I did. My crossword solving streak is even more important to me than my wee little WRUW posting streak.
I’ve never done a cryptic, so if I ever do, I will certainly need lots of help. I’m a New York Times guy.
I've always done cryptics though haven't for a few years now. I started by helping my grandmother do hers. While she cooked Sunday roast I'd be reading the clues and she'd be providing the answers without looking at the paper. She also used to do the skeleton cryptic, where you have to figure out where the black squares are and how long each answer is. Something like the below but with cryptic clues. She had a razor sharp mind.

I got it from my Grandma as well. Somehow she managed, with a tremor, to hold a cigarette, a pen, a cup of coffee, and a crossword dictionary all at the same time while she did the puzzle.
