Is it just me or is Shinola becoming more and more expensive?

When I bought my 47mm Runwell Quartz back in 2015 I paid around $530 at the time it was my most expensive watch. I also paid retail the AD refused to budge on any discounts according to them Shinola was against it. I wore it for a few months till like all of Us, went on to something else. I had to sell several watches in order to buy it. Fast forward a few years later and Shinola stated making Automatics which I love. The only problem I have is for what they charge it’s like buying a Hamilton, Certina, Mido CW and a few others. Case in point this Yacht Timer that retails for $3,650 for a compilation that no one’s really gonna use?

For that price I’d rather get a used GS Automatic, Tudor BB 58, etc.

Do they just not sell in enough quantity to get some economies of scale, or are they a greedy sham? To be fair, there is a thinning of the middle and most are having to pick a side and the higher end seems to be the preferred route.

Good question I’m sure they sell tons of watches, but what they charged for some of their watches most will go elsewhere. I even thought of getting another one but something else always grabs my attention.

That specific watch is an outlier in their collection. The Runwell quartz are around $600, same as 7 years ago when I was given mine. The autos run $1500 ish, which isn’t cheap but comparable to other Selita 200 movement watches. They’ve released a few watches targeting higher end prices and good on them for trying, I’d love to see one of these up close, but most of their catalog is similar prices to 2015 or so I think.

I think Shinola gets a bad shake amongst Watch nerds, they’re not the best but they’re not the worse either.

That’s pushing into Tag Monaco prices without the Heritage.

I hear they’re opening a store in Grand Rapids soon so I’ll probably take a peak at my home front competition 🤣

·

They used to sell just retro-styled quartz watches. Accounting for inflation, those are probably not more expensive than they used to be. (And that styling defined the brand at that time.)

They lost me with the introduction of their dive watches.

Nothing against Shinola, I actually like some of their designs but at that price point I’d rather go with Longines or Tudor. We are even getting into decent second hand Omega territory here at $3K+. I feel this watch might be something like a halo model for them to show what they can do. I don’t think they are expecting huge numbers will be sold but can use this as an advertising draw.

The way they market Detroit so hard, but only assemble parts just seems a little watered-down to me.

I'd like to see them tone that marketing down, or alternatively, they could up their game and start manufacturing something to reinforce the "domestic production" message that they're trying to market.

Even if it was just a case or a dial or something.

When they get into that 2-4k price range, for domestic production I'm looking at Weiss, who actually is manufacturing parts.

·

for way less i'd get a detroit mint

I sail and race. This is an extremely odd shape intended for that activity. The last thing you want on your wrist when maneuvering for position at the beginning of a race is a big thing with square corners. But, I'm also a Detroit designer and have a dim view of the brand as a whole.

·

As a native Detroiter even I don’t buy the Shinola hype. Had a Runwell 41, sold it within a year.

·

Not interested in Shinola at all. To me it will always be a shoe polish.

There's a reason you don't know shit from shinola ...
