How do you service your watch?

We all know mechanical timepieces need to be serviced, and I find myself reminded of this often every time I see one of the numerous watch servicing/repair videos (with a very special place in my heart for Marshall). I’m curious how everyone else takes care of their mechanical watches.

I wish a fifth answer was available so I could break up those who don’t service their watches vs those who haven’t figured out what they prefer yet, but maybe some comments will help people out.

I start with a little wine and some smooth talking and then…oh, wait, no…uuuhhh, I send them to the dealer.

I do all my own service on my watches.

So far I have only had 1 watch serviced and I sent it back to the OEM. In the future I think I would do my research and send it to an independent watchmaker.

For me it depends on the watch and its age. If within warranty then its with the brand. If outside the warranty then my preferred watch repairer. Cheaper and quartz watches, happy to let them run until they die and only consider battery change.

Good YouTube video by Chronoglide saying when a watch needs servicing. He said that every 5 years no longer applies, due to synthetic oils being used. These do not degrade / age harden, as do mineral oils. The main pointer being amplitude loss.
