Wristwatch Price Guide from 1984

Some of you may recall that I have been given a couple of vintage timegraphers. The same person also gave me this price guide from 1984. Its interesting to see what prices vintage watches were commanding 42 years ago. For example, for a Rolex GMT - Master Oyster in Stainless Steel and 25 Jewel automatic movement that was built in CA 1960 you could expect to pay anywhere between $275 - $375. Meanwhile, a Hamilton Thinline 2001 in Stainless Steel from approx 1967 could be had for between $20-40.

We have a #vintage price guide. I use it all the time to research/date old movements or find model names. I wish they updated those still!

I can imagine that the research needed to make books like these is a nightmare! Can you imagine having to search sold prices for what would be literally thousands of reference numbers today?

My birth year 👍time machine anyone 🙄🤣😬that's kind of my limit of paying now, don't like going above 2k definitely no daydate for that 😂good post my friend, people should look at this before they spend 20k upwards there not worth anymore than originally priced it's an illusion 😉

It is kind of crazy that models that commanded a few hundred dollars in the 80s can now command tens of thousands, even accounting for inflation!

If people didn't pay and the demand wasn't how it is,ie aftermarket sales more than retail, people paying 5k for a watch but then paying 20+ for the same watch because its a popular colour 😂the prices would come down, shame this will never happen,my favourite brand has gone in to the bracket I won't pay GS,luckily the aftermarket is nice 👌

If only time travel were possible! I would be loaded up with watches!

I have the same vintage price guide from 1990. I know it had to be hard to get information on different watches back then. There is an advertisement in the book offering to buy, borrow or rent people's materials for future books. Even though it's older, the book still makes a good reference on different models.
