Something that changed my perspective. Citizen NY0040-17L

So after revamping my watch collection, I passed from six watches to only two, prioritizing use time and use cases. Anyways, I was looking for a true automatic beater, preferably with very good WR, whoever G-Shocks did not call my attention nor the legendary SKX.

Doing some research, I noticed that well beneath the surface, the Citizen Promaster Diver had some cult and I understood why: robust build, 200m WR, timeless design, great legacy (as it served for the Italian military). With all this, I pulled the trigger pretty quickly.

I grabbed mine from Jomashop, as for some weird reason, the NY0040 series are on an aggressive discoun (there's a rumour that it will be discontinued). Mine came with the Citizen Caliber 8204, which is even better because some buyers received the 8203 caliber, which is not hackable.

My previous experience with Citizen was quite average, as I had the Citizen Chandler which was a good watch, but sold it pretty quickly. But this watch changed everything, from the blue sunburst dial, to the robust look that it has. A real gem. It really help me to change my perspective on Citizen as a true, pure quality watch builder.

What are your thoughts on Citizen? Do you think the SKX has a real rival here?

Pics for reference.

I own the full lume dial version and it’s amazing how rugged it is especially compared to the 5kx “divers”

From Seiko although I also love those for different reasons

Very nice. Great color too.

I have a big blue Citizen as well.

Here's my Citizen Promaster I love it

I think the blue Duro is the best looking beater, but Citizen is a very close second. They should have kept the NDL table when they upgraded the strap though.

Does that Promaster have a left-handed crown?

The lower priced automatic divers do, this one and the Fugu. It's an easy way to tell if the movement is automatic or eco-drive. The challenge diver has the typical right crown.

I didn't know! Thanks for the lesson! 👍🏼 🤓

It's a modern classic, still available to buy new at a reasonable price. I love mine which is also the blue sunburst version. Gets more wrist time than my SKX.

I doubt it'll ever reach the cult status of the SKX among online watchdom, not that I care about that.
