It’s a old question -is it a hobby or an addiction

The last month I’ve been thinking of selling off my whole collection except for two watches. My speedmaster would be staying but I just couldn’t decide on which other watch I would keep otherwise I would have gone ahead and done it. I knew I didn’t want to keep my captain willard so that went. But I’ve been struggling with the others. I spent a day looking at watches two weeks ago trying to kick start my enthusiasm and every thing I tried on was a disappointment apart from a grand seiko SBGH271 which hit the spot for me. I’ve been collecting and enjoying watches since the 80’s and have had lots of lovely watches but lately I’ve just lost all enthusiasm for watches I’ve stopped watching YouTube watch videos and looking in jewlers windows altogether. I came to the conclusion that I was done with the hobby and was moving on. Six months ago I made a list of watches I wanted to buy between then and my retirement I put them In order and when I was going to get them but I was looking at the list and nothing excited me.

Then today I saw that one of my watches on my list a seiko GMT was 30% off in a Black Friday sale and before I knew it I had bought it. In the words of scarface they pulled me back in😂 I thought I could control it and could give up at any time. Obviously not I can’t give up. My advice to you younger would be collectors is just say no and abstain before it too late for escape like it is for me.

I think I’m going to need a bigger box 😂

Exactly my thoughts but apparently “most people wouldn’t “😳

It’s both an addiction and a hobby, I’ve had to break the addiction if buying every pretty watch I see

·

Its never over. I had to explain that to my wife the other day. The hunt is never over.

·

Definitely an addiction. I would explain why but I just need to check eBay, and Chrono24, and Watchfinder, and AliX, and the local second hand stores, and.....

·

Not an addiction, but for me also not much of a hobby just a habit that I find relaxing, a harmless affectation that makes life a bit more interesting.

I’ve thought about it a lot and I do think that for many, myself included, it really is an addiction. I really get peculiar if I don’t have a watch that I’m either saving for or waiting to receive. And I look at watches all the time. I find myself lost in the dial on my wrist. I will even watch the minute hand moving. For FUN!

So that’s either addiction or madness, take your pick!
