Watch Collecting: the DARK SIDE !??!

I wanted to discuss the hobby. As much as I love watches, I get concerned that it sends the wrong message to people I know, people I don’t know or patients at work. It is extravagant and consumerism at its best. I would never post a wrist roll on instagram as I believe it would look boastful or hedonistic. This is why I love WatchCrunch as it doesn’t feel like showing off but talking and connecting with other people of the same passion. I enjoy looking at watches and reading about watches without ever considering buying them, this is how I persuade myself I don’t have a problem lol. What do you think ?

As long as you are not ruining your personal relationships and wealth and are in control of your urges it’s fine. People collect a lot of different things, for us it happens to be watches. No harm done.

I’d love to show my pieces around and talk about them in Instagram, but it will really come across as out of touch with the current state of affairs and the “real” problems of my friends. I’m not the flexing guy (and can’t do much flexing with my affordable collection), but even a sum of a few hundreds sends the wrong message to a population very unused to pay more than $80 for a timepiece (except if it’s an Apple Watch). That’s why I scratch my itch here in WatchCrunch.

I don't think there's a problem at all posting pictures of watches you enjoy and love. While there are certainly bigger problems in the world, watch enthusiasm is a hobby and enjoyed like any other hobby.

No different than any other enthusiast hobby.

Dont have to be a flexer if you lost pics.

Yeah WC is pretty great. I've definitely learned a lot here and also had a lot of fun and laughs as well. Totally not into flexing and there are places for that (not here) if you want to do that. Everyone here is genuinely into watches and appreciating the art and science of it all.

I think I see where you're coming from.

Patients may see pics & think "no wonder he's so expensive! I'm financing his luxury purchases!

what a braggart!"

Similarly, I have family that are financially well off.

But my father in law would purposely show up to a customer's place, driving a well worn pickup truck.

& I mean a work truck, not one of today's 6 figure monstrosities, although he could afford a fleet.

He was always conscious of people's perceptions.

Not sure if that's apples to oranges or not.

FWIW, I don't think that IWC means as much to non watch nerds.

In fact, it's boring. You should send it my way.😃

If it makes you feel better here where I live, if you can’t even afford one rolex as a doctor you’re probably bad at your job. Especially for the older generation 50+.

Personally I don’t care for other peoples opinions; why? Everyone is always surprised when I tell them my hobbies and they always comment I don’t look like it… how is someone with a certain hobby to look or not look like? So honestly relax enjoy your hobby.

People collect cars, artwork, knives, things that go bang, chainsaws (yes, I know a guy who collects chainsaws) farm equipment, wine, rocks, jewelry, gold boullion, pens, military memorabilia, handbags, shoes, and all other assorted things. Having a timepiece that represents quality, success, social status, etc is not a ‘bad’ thing. My Vet wears a Rolex Presidential every day at work he bought for himself as a graduation celebration in the ‘70’s. That thing was always crusty with guts, poop, blood, fur, etc. I love that watch! Very few people recognized it for what it was. He’s since retired and lives on a sailboat. Good on him! Do what you want. You earned it. You do you!!! (As I head up to see the podiatrist and looking forward to seeing what watch he’ll be sporting today!) Unless it says “Rolex” on the dial, most folks won’t even know what it is. Even if it does, they won’t know the $$$

Braggart is a great word haha. Haha I love the new mark xx blue dial. Give me a forwarding address lol.

I wouldn’t worry so much about patients at work, more getting into trouble with any old school bolshie nurses for not being bare below the elbows!🤣
