The Sweet Life: or Christmas shopping in August
Over the years I've been a watch enthusiast/collector/addict I've bought a few watches for my wife, but never for my two adult daughters. Till now. Originally, I was only going to buy the one, for daughter number 2's birthday later this month. But the Jomashop Summer Sale made a twofer as Christmas presents a viable option.
I chose the Longines Dolce Vita L5.512.4.71.6 on steel bracelet because "Longines Ambassador of Elegance" Jennifer Lawrence told me to. No wait, that's not it. I like the Dolce Vita's old school, classic "tank" style dress watch looks. Two classy watches for two classy women - perfect! Quartz was a big plus since neither of my daughters is into mechanical watches; one wears an Apple watch, the other a G-Shock for work (active-duty military).
My biggest decision point was the size. The watch comes in 20.8mm by 32mm or 23.3mm by 37mm. They make a men's size automatic/date version at 28.2mm by 47mm as well. Decided to go with the 23.3x37 case size. It's not quite as dainty as the smaller case, but not so large to be mistaken for a men's watch on a woman's wrist, which was key since my aim was classy feminine, not classy masculine.
The dial is quite lovely, what Longines calls silver "flinqué" - which I had to google. Flinqué as I understand it is essentially guilloché with enamel applied to the surface. Blued steel hands, small seconds, and painted Roman numerals under sapphire glass, signed crown, 17mm lug width, 7.2mm thick, 3 ATM water resist, 86 grams on bracelet...and not a brushed surface to be seen. I'll likely purchase a nice strap for each as well.
Now to wrap them up and hide them till Christmas! Hopefully they like them...and hopefully four months from now I'll remember where I hid them 🙄!
