Omega Speedmaster Moonphase review

Image

I have this Speedy now long enough for a review. It joined my collection over the summer and as many have seen on WRUW, its a common sight on my wrist. I am a fan of Moonphase watches, so when looking at Speedies, this caught my eye. It is not a traditional Speedy. This is not the ‘movement that went to the Moon’. Rather, this is Omega pushing the bounds of what they can do with a Chronometer. It has the 9904 movement, with several unique features. It’s METAS certified, very accurate (mine runs at ~+0.3/sec/day), 54 (!) jewels, ceramic bezel, anti-magnetic, 100m water resistant, and has a column-wheel chronograph.

Like the others in the 9900 series there are only two subdials, one has a two hand (minute and hour) chronograph dial, the other has the small seconds and the date. Unlike the other 9900 movements theres a moonphase window at 6 o’clock with a ‘photorealistic‘ moon. The other 9900’s have a date window at 6 and a single hand on the left subdial.

It‘s a big boy, at 44.25mm in diameter and 16mm thickness, much of that due to the raised sapphire front and back crystals. That said, it wears comfortably with its OG leather strap. I found the Omega NATO strap moved it to too far out on my wrist, but converting the strap to single pass (just don’t tell my AD I cut an Omega NATO 😉) made it wear well. It’s also wears well on a Crown & Buckle Chevron. Below is a comparison to my other Omegas and a view of the C&B.

So, this one is for you if you want to see the product of a well known brand who decides to throw everything at a watch. Despite its many complications and size, its very wearable on my 7.25” wrist. It’s also very well made, close to GS level finishing on the dial and superior on the movement side. Overall to me a big win, but probably not a watch for everyone.

  • Beautiful Moonphase
  • Interesting subdials
  • Great finish
  • Brand history taken to a new place
  • Large, it is balanced on the OG strap, need to use single pass NATOs

I heard they didn't send this one to the moon to save weight.  That said, it looks great, and I guess all that tech justifies the size.

Great review! Thanks. I love my Moon Watch, but this iteration is such an interesting and funky hidden gem. If my pockets could handle it, I’d love to add it to my collection. Enjoy!!

I think you‘re right, they would have needed another booster on the Saturn! 🚀

Love your Speedy Pro also. I thought long and hard on this one.

Good review: Short and simple. I am glad you are trying them on different nato straps.

I have the same watch (Blue on Blue leather). My wife gifted me this one. Not sure what's wrong with her.

My wife actually picked this out with me. We are lucky guys!

I own the same watch for about 5 years now. Though, the Christopher Ward C65 (38mm manual) is my daily beater. Despite the moon phase Speedy size (my wrist is also 7.25") I find that it wears really well, it hugs my wrist with a firm yet comfortable grip. I toyed with the idea to switch to a nato strap but the leather feels so at ease on the wrist, well more than my bond nato on my C65.

Yes, the accuracy of the coaxial movement is almost on par with quartz. Absolutely amazing. It sounds great too.

In the moon plate, right in the sea of tranquility, there are the Buzz Aldrin's foot prints. You'll need a loupe to see it. The attention to details on this watch is really parallel to GS. Top notch indeed.
