Watch Winding Experience

Which mechanical watches in your collection you enjoy winding the most? For me that would be the Speedy, very smooth with each turn of the crown. The crisp sound of the rotating gear is just perfect giving the impression that all the parts within are working together harmoniously. Love to hear your experience!

Love bicompax dials!

Fun question! My fav winding experience would be the Hanhart. The oversized crown allows a comfortable tactile grip and the wind is smooth, producing a nice “mechanical” sound, engaging the gears with each turn 🤙

I hear ye! Crown size and the knurling definitely play a part 😁

My Longines Zulu Time is very nice, from the gratifying "pop" as the screw-down crown is unscrewed, to the smooth winding and no back play I sometimes get from some of my other watches, to the very easy re-engagement of the threads as I screw the crown back in. It also makes nearly zero sound while being wound, though I have a Seiko that makes an audible clicking sound which is nice as well.

I fully agree with you coz i have one. I also wonder the same, how the movement produces no sound during winding? Still a great watch nevertheless, good accuracy. What dial color you have? Or perhaps you can post a pic here? 😉

I have the original 42mm anthracite dial. It’s the one I’m using for my profile pic.

Aahhh.. forgive me for not noticing. It's almost 2:30 am here 🥱🥱 We both have the same dial color 👍

Nothing to be sorry for. I hope you’re going to bed soon, or at least have lots of coffee at the ready.

·

Definitely hitting the sack. Good night! (or morning?!)

Love winding my Zenith Hand Wind and watching the power reserve move up like a fuel gauge.

·

My 1953 IWC, such a strong feedback on the crown. Speedy 3861 also great, but different - more smooth

·

Grand Seiko SBGW231 gets my vote. So easy to wind. It was my first manual wind and going from that to a newer Speedy made the Speedy feel so stiff in comparison.

·

Panerai 233 dot 8 day GMT.

·

It's got to be the Hanhart. I look forward to winding this one up.

My Record “Dirty Dozen”. It’s got the loudest wind I’ve ever heard, and must take over 40 turns to fully wind it. It’s got such a big crown which means you only need to hold the crown lightly, and when you reach full power reserve your fingers can instantly feel it. Oh and you can hear it ticking from over 2 feet away 😂

Pretty sure you enjoy the ticking by now. Thanks for sharing!

My CB01 with Soprod P024. I’m not sure why? The crown size and knurl, the right amount of crunch and yet smooth? For me it all just works perfectly together.

Good to hear you're enjoying the watch!

My Omega Seamaster 300, Speedy, Tudor BB GMT, CyS, Oris Aquis, Panerai and believe or not my Mido and Steinhart. They all are extremely smooth when winding.

Glad to know, thanks for sharing Doc! My least favorite is the Tudor BB chrono. Keeping good time but a bit "rough" to wind. It shares the same B01 movement as the Navitimer but not sure if the Breitling has similar trait. Any idea?

I never would have guessed that considering it's a Tudor. Surprising to say the least. Thanks Nazrain 🍻

To be fair I've not tried the Navitimer, maybe that's how it is with the movement. It can still wind, no resistance at all. Maybe I'm just nit-picking 🤣

I’ve seen it quoted at +8 seconds per day but my model has a swan neck regulator that’s supposed to improve the movement so I’m not entirely sure. Haven’t had mine on a timegrapher

I can live with +8 secs/day. Hey better early than late right 😉? Thanks, enjoy the weekend!

I never really understood the fascination with winding feel until I got this. It’s one of the cheapest watches in my collection but it’s got the most amazing onion crown and the winding feels better than anything else I have.

The bund strap is so cool 😎

And super comfortable with the alcantara lining.

I have a Hamilton that does not make any sound at all. I bought it off eBay and thought it was broken, It runs great and keeps steady time, i am not sure if I prefer that level of silence and smoothness or a nice mechanical cranking noise 😉

Probably the same movement as the Longines. After all they're in the same Swatch group. That's what I get when I wind my Zulu time. Great at keeping time though!

I only own the SMP and Speedy and therefore can't comment on their other product lines. But winding these 2 Omegas is a pleasure. Thanks for sharing!

I can relate to that. Growing up I watched my father religiously spending each night winding his watches before putting them in his beloved watch box. Thought it was silly sitting there in the study with his favorite coffee. Now I know what it means 🙂
