Shinola brand

What are your thoughts on the Shinola watch?

Shinola is very interesting. I like their Titanium diver the Ice Monster best.  I liked it a lot more prior to price increases. ISO certified,  great movement,  beautiful case and decent bracelet. I do have a quartz  Shinola gifted to me. I'm not a movement snob I just don't prefer quartz watches that look like an automatic movement watch. Give me a G Shock or a Solar Promaster and I am happy. A Dress Watch that like a mechanical watch isn't my style.  My wife gave it to me so I keep it in a safe wore it maybe twice Fit and finish are great. Would wear in an automatic version . This pic is the Ice Monster

For some reason to me they’re missing something, like something a brand just has or doesn’t.  I duno if it’s soul but their watch design don’t seem to have life..maybe I’m crazy.  But I love the the shopping experience there!

If you like large quartz watches they are just fine for the price. I know people who love theirs. They are just too large for my well proportioned wrists.

If you can get past their history with the FTC and former deceptive advertising practices, they some make good looking watches. Many of their lines seem to cater to those looking for big/borderline massive watches and they are certainly overpriced at MSRP, but that aside one can often find really good deals on them in the secondary market or resellers.  Looking at the site now, all but one of their automatic watches are between 43 and 45MM, which rules my wrist out.  Their sole stand out, to me, is the Monster GMT. Good specs, 40mm, and comes with the Sellita SW330-2 which is a solid movement.

But at $2000, it is arguably overpriced when you think above all the other watches that use the same movement. Would I pay $2000 for that, when I can get a Farer like the Charlton at under $1500?

There are a ton of awesome watches with that movement. I think the watch is a good buy at $1200 ish, maybe a little more if you put a premium on it being assembled in Detroit.

Lastly, if you are a quartz fan, they have a ton of neat options, especially used ones that seem cool for well under $300.  Like @TimeJunkie, my preferences lean on the automatic side, but if that does not matter head to ebay and grab a lightly used Runwell.

So true! You can get the same movement in a Marathon GSAR that's been regulated, has that USA stamp of approval vibe - if that's a reason to like or buy, and has a cult following. Teddy Baldassarre has the Large on sale right now at $1,300.00 Pre-owned may be even a better deal
