The People’s GMT Watch - SSK003 Review

The SSK003 is a curious thing. With a case design based on the SKX, it might possibly be one of the most iconic silhouettes in the watch world. However, its character differs significantly from that of the SKX.

Firstly (and most obviously) it is a GMT watch. The SSK003 is one of the most affordable ways to get into mechanical GMT watch ownership, yet it manages to still be an appealing overall package, with stellar case finishing, a solid bezel, an (in my case) fairly accurate movement and a jubilee bracelet which seems to be one of the best in its category.

Secondly, it has a glossy bezel. While not a true ceramic bezel, the SSK003 features a glossy bezel which provides the watch with a more premium aesthetic and ergonomic feel than the matte aluminium bezel on an SKX.

Thirdly and finally, it is not a dive watch. I will not go into this further as it usually causes arguments.

This watch is truly incredible for the price and functionality it offers. However, I would advise trying it on. Even on my 17cm wrist, it is borderline overwhelmingly large due to its thickness and huge 43mm diameter - it’s only saving grace being the ~46mm lug to lug.

In conclusion, this watch is still technically extremely impressive for the price (albeit not for everybody and with its share of downsides). It offers a Mechanical GMT movement with solid water resistance and genuinely impressive finishing (particularly the brush work on the case and the extraordinarily comfortable bracelet) for a price that cannot be argued with.

8/10, definitely recommend for the price.

I forgot this nickname existed for the SSK, I only ever think about it in the context of the GMT Master.

Why relegate it to only Rolex? It’s just as valid of a name here 👍

Considering I just did it at 3am I’ll take that as a good sign - thanks for the kind words and I hope this helps

As I alluded to in the Seiko - Rolex post, they are more alike than most realise.

Wearing mine right now. The first of my intentional collection, so I guess it was my gateway watch.

BTW-I recommend these custom curved straps from UncleStraps.com. My wrist is 5mm smaller than yours and this band is the most stable and comfortable I have for it.

Seiko still makes great watches despite their dubious price structure at times
