Cheap Chinese Watch Repair/Mod Kit ๐Ÿ‘ or ๐Ÿ‘Ž

My rather Casio heavy personal collection was perfectly serviceable with a small screwdriver set I got from a fancy Christmas cracker a few years ago so up until now I haven't seen the need for one of these kits. Spring bars on the few watches where I do change straps were popped out with the 'free' tool included with one of said straps.

So why have I bought one of those cheap random Chinese watch repair/mod kits (it included a crystal/caseback press not pictured) for the grand total of ยฃ22.50 from Amazon?

As so often happens I ended up down a rabbit hole when looking at modding watches one evening and impulse purchased this kit.

So far it's a big ๐Ÿ‘ from me as I'm pleasantly surprised at the quality as I was expecting complete trash to arrive.

I am wondering what experiences my fellow Crunchers have had with these kits, would be awesome if you could share your successes/failures (RIP to my Fossil watch) when using them!

I got one very similar to this for 21โ‚ฌ. Had to demagnetise the tweezers (with the provided hammer) but otherwise it gets the job done. I am by no means a professional but I have been tinkering with some old Russian mechanicals just fine.ย

Looks like it came with punches and not screwdrivers. I would spend just a little more on those. For battery changes and bracelet adjustments these kits are fine, with maybe the addition of small pliers and the aforementioned screwdrivers. If you are serious about opening watches there will be other things that are really helpful.

It has a variety of screwdriver heads that attach to the gold tube in the middle of the kit, they are hidden inside. It's likely going to just for a bit of fun and general tinkering on something that can be 'ruined'. I wouldn't let it near anything premium though ๐Ÿ˜‚ I agree on the small pliers, tweezers were great for getting batteries out and bracelet pin removal was hassle free though!

Ah, and I thought it was just a pin vise, and you can probably use it as such.

I bought one of these kits from eBay. As the old saying goes "you get what you pay for". In the end I found that I ended up buying quality replacement items.

  • proper set of hollow ground screwdrivers, from South Korea
  • Bergeron springbar tool and spring bar tweezers
  • 3x drug store glasses, which are easier to use than the plastic lens loupe in the kit
  • metal bracelet pin vice
  • plastic tweezers, which are perfect if you intend to swap batteries
  • sticky kids rubber ball, to remove casebacks without potential tear rendering scratchesย

Heard that name a few times, Bergeron seems to be the one to turn too if an upgraded SBT is ever on the cards ๐Ÿ˜Š
