Glorious Seikomatic

Last year I took a break from watch forums and media. However in the last couple of months I got the itch to try a vintage piece! This 1961 Seikomatic popped up one day and I knew I had to have it. It's equipped with the rarer thirty-jewel Calibre 603 'Seikomatic' movement rather than the seventeen or twenty jewel variant, and the octagonal sun marking above the six o'clock indice indicates that this is a 'Special Dial' model.

Special Dials, Applique Dials and Extra Dials are all part of an interesting quality grading system Seiko used in the 1960s (you can read more about them here). The long and short of it is that the Special Dial symbol means the indices are solid 14k or 18k yellow gold on this model, and they have been mounted to the dial using the shokuji technique. This is where the indices are fitted into the dial using pins on their underside, a very laborious process.

All in all I'm very happy with this piece, the dial is in excellent condition and it's keeping good time so far. Share your lucky finds below!
