Next Watch Quandary?

Curious if anyone else has ever hit the "next watch" quandary? My current collection is by no means in a place I would consider complete. I have lots of watches in my wishlist, and I have even gone so far as to sit at website checkouts with my finger hovering over the BUY NOW button. But I just can't seem to pull the trigger.

I just can't seem to hone in on what I want my next watch to be. It almost feels like what I assume writer's block must feel like. In most of the rest of my life I am very decisive and usually pretty quick to make decisions. But right now, I just can't seem to find the right place to scratch.

It's not as if the itch is gone, I still spend the better part of my free time looking at watches and on youtube viewing watch content. There are a fair few that are beyond my current financial position, which I am sure will always be the case. But there are many that are certainly within my reach.

Would love to hear anybody else's story along these lines and how you got past it.

Cheers.

Seems to me like a natural phase to be in. With an existing collection AND deepening knowledge of ‘what is out there’ you get the double whammy of ‘how will this fit into / add to my collection’ as well as the overwhelming choice all major, minor and microbrands across the world have to offer (+ the vintage offerings…). So a stage of ‘being stumped’ is quite normal I think. If you REALLY want to break it, just order a Pagani homage :-)

I think healthy watch enthusiasm is when you can fully appreciate watches from afar without feeling the need to buy everything you like. Best [relevant] thing someone ever said to me was, "you can like and appreciate things without needing to own them, ya know."

I’d say that’s part of being a collector of anything. But don’t let it become an obsession as it will take away from the fun of the journey.

Here is my take. Note, I'm new to watches, I only started "collecting" about a year ago, and now have 8 watches. I'm relatively comfortable with what I have, but have a list of 17 that I'm considering as next purchases. I also don't know what my upper limit will be. For example, I don't think I want to own 50 watches, but I'm pretty sure I want more than 10. And I'm sure that will fluctuate over time. At this point, I'm becoming much more selective, and my main consideration is, will I want to wear a new watch as much as I want to wear my 2 main watches right now, which are a Grand Seiko SLGH005 and a Tag Heuer Carrera CBN2A10.BA0643. Three watches that absolutely fall into that category with a yes are:

  • Zenith Captain Power Reserve (03.2120.685/02.C498)

  • Carl F. Bucherer Manero Flyback (00.10919.08.13.01)

  • Ebel Le Modular 3137240

But then, I also would like another black dial watch, but I already have a SARB033, which I love. And I was considering a few options like a Sinn 556, or a Ball Fireman. But I'm not sure I would wear those as much as the Seiko, so not sure they will make the cut. And I really don't want to have watches that I only wear once or twice a year, except for my dress watch, which I really only wear when I'm wearing a suit. So as I get more watches, I'm becoming much more selective.

Take a break. Forcing a purchase will make you regret it. When it's time, the right watch will speak to you. Patience!

Well the suspense has ended, after a few more "carts full" experiences. I ran across this post earlier today. And that was all she wrote! 🙂
