My review on the Omega Speedmaster mark ii Co-Axial

My review on the Omega Speedmaster mark ii Co-Axial
My first review and thoughts which i am putting out there for the watch world to agree, disagree but hopefully give me some feedback, good or bad.

We all have watches that we lust over or admire from a far. Amongst the obvious offerings from the likes of Rolex and the Trinity brands which we would all snatch up given the chance, I like many had my fill of Rolex. I have two of them but i have got tired with the stupidness that goes on. I was offered a Explorer 2 black dial 2022 model in March from my AD but i turned it down. This was a big call for me as i loved the Explorer 2.

My eyes had already turned towards Omega. Like we all know they have a long and equally impressive history alongside the big R. In my head i had mentally added half of their offers to my watch box. I was intent on adding a Speedmaster and spent hour after hour researching and comparing the old to new speedy, hesalite or sandwich etc. I had also looked heavily at the Speedmaster Mark ii.

my initial impression was that it was simply beautiful. the barrel shaped case along with the classic speedmaster dial layout just sung to me. Im a 80's boy so this retro style but modern speedy just felt right. I wanted to try one on immediately but as with these things i simply could not find a Mark ii in the local Ad or shop. Nobody it seemed had one available. My local watch search consists of London and i still drew a blank. This was  incredibly frustrating. I was so sure of this watch i bought it blind from a recognised AD in London.
6 week wait which i later learned was due to sourcing from Switzerland itself, i had the watch in hand early February 22. now approaching 7 months of daily wear i feel i can offer a genuine owners review.

I went with the standard Black Dial as for me the black and white dial variation. The dial and Lume on this piece is killer and uniquely different.
The watch in person is fantastic. Im my eyes a proper 'Dads' sports watch. This thing is super comfortable on wrist. Having read all the reviews i could find on this watch the most criticised point would be the brick thickness. I’ve tried to picture this but the photos do not capture the size correctly to the eye in person. It is a thick watch at 14.85 mm but i barely notice its size.
I can confirm the bracelet on this watch hugely assists in the wear of this chunky watch. The bracelet does not flare out and drops straight down from the lugs. This is something a small wrist person like me really appreciates. The bracelet one sized as a micro 1 mm per click adjustment. This really helps with the on the fly adjustment.
The movement for some is a bone of contention. This i find a ridiculous.

The movement an Omega calibre 3330. i believe is a modified ETA with the added Omega benefit of This movement has a column-wheel mechanism, a co-axial escapement, an Si14 silicon balance spring and a power reserve of 52 hours. This is more than good enough for me and im sure everybody else out there. A work horse. We don’t need in house movements in every watch. People that believe this are in my mind a little short sighted.

The only gripe I can find for the watch is the edges of the clasp in the side that meets the wrist. I have noticed occasionally that they can be razor sharp. Whilst this is annoying it believe an easy fix. Again I only notice this on a rare occasion.

I wanted a watch which I was sure I would rarely or never see on another wrist. we know the original Speedy is a strong seller and I have seen many on my walks in the cities of London. Im Confident I wont see or notice a Mark ii quite as easily.

To sum up i lusted over this watch for the longest time and pulled the trigger. I have not once regretted this purchase and i find myself wearing the mark ii more often than the other pieces in my collection. I believe this Speedmaster is a grey area watch, one that perspective buyers look at then move on to the original, now updated Speedmaster which the consensus of the wider circle suggest is the only one to buy. Its a shame as they don’t know what there missing. Its a cracking watch and one that deserves more attention and will do well on any Dad's wrist

Dare to be different, peace out 💪

I believe that the calibre 3330 is based on the Longines L688 which finally gives the Speedy an overly deserved column wheel.  The chronograph pushers should be much crisper on this model as well.

Nice review, great looking. My Omega watches (Speedmaster, NTTD Seamaster 300 AT Seamaster) are sturdy and attractive. Either the Speedy or the Seamaster 300 could easily be a daily wear.

Thanks. I do love this reference. Agreed I also have a seamaster 300m. Cracking watch. Since owning the Omega's I have turned away from the big R

Great review! The Mkii is the first Speedmaster I ever "noticed" and along with my Doxa, what got me looking at the Swiss watch brands. I tried one on a couple of years ago and was a bit taken aback by the case thickness. I have a 6.5" wrist, and it felt quite tall and immediately got me worried about banging it around. I put it down and quickly moved it to the far corners of my mind. As I got used to wearing the Doxa the fear of slightly larger cases dissipated. The Mkii (racing dial in particular) found it's way back at the forefront and I went to try one on again. I tried on a moonwatch and '57 master chronometer at the same time and at that moment the MKii paled a bit in comparison and I actually went on a tangent and started seeking a broad arrow reissue (3594.50) instead. Then I see your review, and immediately click on it and find that I keep coming back to the MKii as a piece I want in my collection. There's something so cool about it's aesthetic. It's really it's own piece, and as you note, delightfully uncommon too. Well....here I go again seeing what a good used MKii fetches these days...

@yarko_on_the_go thanks. Your thoughts literally echo my own when looking at the mark ii. It burned an image on my mind. I also looked at the 57 (which I also love) I have absolutely no regrets buying it. Do not be scared of the thickness . I also have 6 half inch wrist. You can defo carry it off. It is thick for sure but this doesn't cross my mind now  its like a natural acceptance.
