My vintage watch isn’t working

I bought a watch at an antique store for 7 dollars, so I’m not too worried about it. But it won’t run unless I pull out (or) push in the crown (it’s not a hacking seconds hand) and than it will run for a bit and than stop. Not sure what’s wrong with it, but curious to see if anyone knew what could be wrong with it.

Probably gummed up with dried oil. Its a Standard time movement

Looks like a good candidate for learning how to service your own watch.

If you’re not fussed about accidentally killing it (slim chance, but a chance) give it a careful spray with WD40 electronics cleaner (not normal WD) and see if you can carefully manually release the energy in the mainspring. Then wind it and see what happens. You may have to repeat the process. I have brought back about half a dozen watches this way, and they now run (but need a full service as they lose or gain about 5 mins a day) and wind, whereas before they were jammed and might go for a few seconds only.

Now I’m no watchmaker but I would say that movement and watch needs a cleaning. There’s alot of dirt, prob impeding the movement.
