Seiko Prospex SBEC005 50th Anniversary Limited Edition

This one has been on my radar for quite a while. But, I finally made a move for one. For me, the Seiko Prospex SBEC005 50th Anniversary Limited Edition is a very handsome automatic chronograph.

Seemingly identical at first glance to the Seiko Brightz SDGZ013 sold several years before this one, that was the design that initially grabbed my attention. But, by the time I found out about it it was long since sold out, only 500 pcs. There are actually too many fine details about the SDGZ013 that differ from my SBEC005 to call out in this post. Both are nice. But, I do enjoy this newest iteration.. I think the design is a little more refined in some areas and it has closer design cues to the vintage Seiko Speed-timer model from which it is celebrating, I believe the specific reference is the 6138-8000.

Yes, I know the diehard purists aren't exactly 100% down with the correlation between this new model to the vintage one(s). It is not the same. But, I am personally fine with adopting much of the design cues from the vintage reference into a new model.

That being said, I, like I know many others, hope some day Seiko makes a true 6139/6138 reissue in all it's original glory.. well, with modern material & tech upgrades where applicable. Maybe they need to do detailed scans of all the components from the vintage model to recreate a 1:1 of it, like Omega did with their Speedmaster 321 'Ed White' edition.

Going back to this SBEC005, off the top of my head, I enjoy the scale of the watch, the Zaratsu polished case, the offset/asymmetrical vertically brushed silver panda dial, boxed sapphire crystal, and the 8R48 vertical clutch column wheel chronograph that runs inside. For me, this is a cool watch to look upon my wrist when I wear it.

FYI, for those curious, this SBEC005 is the JDM model. The SRQ029J1 is the international model. Essentially, the same watch, just different reference numbers.

Beautiful watch!

Thanks. It definitely meets criteria to have a good looking watch that is always satisfying to look at while on wrist..hell, of even if it isn't and it's just there.

My first experience with Zaratzu polishing was my 300mm. I can stare all day long at it. Your watch it way beyond the 300mm.  Makin   me want one

Hi, nice watch...What make it better than the SDGZ013? I believe it is the same movement and I believe that Brightz finish is better than prospex... I maybe wrong, please give me your thoughts and lights
