Great movies with watches: Chicago Overcoat

Highly underrated mob movie Chicago Overcoat tells the story of an aging former hitman who is too old for what the world has become. Frank Vincent is excellent here as Lou Maranzano. The script and cinematography are on par which much more expensive films. Unfortunately the only thing that holds it back is the budget at times.

A key scene is when Lou winds his gold Baumé and Mercer. A man who still winds his watch in the morning. A relic of days gone by. Interestingly he seems to wear his watch loose, as it falls to his hand easily and plenty of slack in the bracelet is seen when he raises his arm.

Other accessories on display are his serpentine chain necklace and chain bracelet, also in yellow gold.

As I get older I feel more like Lou.

There’s even several lines about a gold watch in the movie.

“Why don’t you retire? Get yourself a gold watch”

“Who wears a watch these days”?
