AAAAAH-LARM! U-Boat Capsoil Review - #1wc

Alright @thorhodes -- you didn't quite tag me properly to actually alert me that it was my turn, but, thankfully, I'm an attentive guy and saw your post anyway. Nice try to knock me out though -- kudos!

In the meantime, and, as if it weren't obvious already, this is my @TheSharperTheBetter-imposed review for the #1wc of @accutron's chosen oil tank...excuse me, watch, for the 1 Watch Challenge.

I've thought long and hard about this and I'm still trying to figure out the name of this watch. I think I have at least decoded part of the enigma (see what I did there? Anyone? Anyone? Sigh -- the perils of majoring in history as an undergrad. Take heed @thorhodes -- don't do it!). The U-Boat part was obvious -- I mean, it's a boat anchor, so if you decide to go swimming with this thing, yeah, you're going to be an unterseeboot very quickly.

What I can't for the life of me figure out is why what should so obviously be a German watch is apparently Italian and Made in Italy? What on earth does "Italo Fontana" have to do with German U-Boats? Is it because they were both Axis powers during WWII? Seems kind of tenuous to me. I don't get it. Oh well.

I have to give credit where it's due. With a left handed/destro crown, the crown on this compact disc...er, watch at least won't dig into your hand if you have to, you know, use it. Unless you're a lefty like me, and wear the watch on the proper (right) wrist (unlike me).

Image

The sheer hulking size of the watch along with the high-contrast black dial and cream colored hands do make the time readable, and thanks to the baby oil between the crystal and the dial, the watch is readable from almost any angle. Furthermore, given the liberal amount that has been slathered on in there, I have it on good authority that the hands on this frisbee...sorry, watch, are smooth as silk! As an added bonus, this benefit transfers to the watchmaker, his workbench, and his tools when it's time to service this piece!

The black PVD coating certainly helps make this piece more stealthy-looking -- or rather, it would if it weren't the size of a dinner plate on @accutron's wrist at 45mm. Hope he enjoys it while it lasts -- PVD coatings are notorious for eventually flaking off, but I guess it's really just that the brand took their theme seriously, given that this "feature" is very similar to the rubber tile coating on submarine hulls.

Speaking of features, did you know that this bicycle wheel...pardon me again, watch (it's the spoke-like indicies throwing me off, people!), doubles as a bubble level? That's right! You can hang your artwork up on the wall and make sure that it's all lined up correctly thanks to the massive bubble of air that they ever so kindly left in the case when they filled the rest of the thing up with oil. Apparently, filling it all of the way would've eaten into their profit margins too much. Just make sure you keep the watch between 0 and +60 degrees when trying to read the time. Apparently, and according to the dial, if you tilt it beyond this, the whole thing stops!

All of this for a four figure price -- it's like getting a true bargain!

</sarcasm>I've obviously sprinkled a healthy dose of sarcasm across this review, mostly for fun. Obviously, I have no ill will towards @accutron for his selection and/or efforts in the #1wc, though I do question the decision to wear the U-Boat as opposed to his lovely bronze CW. Good luck to him and all of the remaining #1wc-ers.

The time is 11:30 a.m. EDT/8:30 a.m. PDT on Friday, June 9, 2023 as this post goes live. @accutron you now have precisely 36 hours to post your review or you are outta' here. <sarcasm> Hopefully your watch is still ticking so you're not late. I, for one, can't tell as there's no seconds hand. </sarcasm> Go!

Hopefully I lived up to your lofty expectations!

Too funny - was confused also about Italian Watch brand called ‘U-boat’. Like instead of Panerai it was called ‘Panzer ‘

And ‘cap soil’. Is this like top soil? Why soil? Also weird.

Despite all the strange names, this watch was interesting with that domed oil crystal trick… but then I noticed it’s a 15 dollar Rhonda quartz and none of these models have a seconds hand…. Arg!

Hate Having no seconds hand 🤣
