Smart Watches aren't watches. They're tiny phone computer things.

I guess the choice of smart watch versus regular timepiece sometimes is about optics: just after situations started to improve after the pandemic I met 2 young men working capital markets: one a MBA wore an Apple while his business partner sported a vintage Tag gifted to him from his race car enthusiast dad who is a well known developer here in Toronto. Our business did not work but we 3 remained friendly, I decided to treat a lunch just to show some appreciation for a decent effort. The Apple guy arrives wearing a lovely blue dial Omega dress watch while his partner switched to a 41mm 2T Rolex Datejust. They both were hired away as VPs to a bigger agency dealing with clients who rightly or wrongly see small signs that they are contacting the right sort of professional. Of course it will always be about talent and ability but doors have to be opened first. In my own experience a certain mechanical watch is also a proper introduction, that we are going to communicate easily.

I’m personally not a fan of smart watches. They are simply an extension of the smartphone in my opinion. Smart watches are designed to be replaced/upgraded as technology improves. Meaning if I was to buy a Apple Watch today in 4-5 years I would probably have to buy a new one when that model becomes ineligible for software updates and consequently performance decreases.

Unlike smartwatches, mechanical watches have the potential to be worn throughout one’s lifespan and passed down generationally provided the watch is serviced regularly and maintained appropriately.
