Watch Winder Orientation

I built the box above and would like to build a Winder box to accompany it in my built in dresser. The challenge is I'd like to tuck it in a drawer with limited vertical clearance, and no commercial solutions exist. I bought a cheap Winder and have broken out the mechanism and plan to rebuild in a custom box.

My question for the group is can the rotation of the watches be only in the horizontal plane, most winders have some angle they rotate on. Will it work if it's flat?

Alternatively, I can build a test rig and figure it out.

If the watch is dial up it won't work as there won't be any gravitational effect on the weight to make it turn, so it has to be at some sort of angle.

That's what I was afraid of, in short the rotor needs to be pull by gravity?

Correct. The "winder" just re-positions the watch so the free energy gravity supplies can do its job.

Just did a little test, I can build a custom box and fit it into the drawer I was trying to utilize at an angle so it uses some gravity for winding.

Unless you spin the watch so fast that the inertia doesn't make the rotor spin, but that will probably end badly for all involved.

·

I inherently knew this but needed someone else to confirm, thanks!

you might get away with a 45 degree angle but that's about it. Don't set it to completely wind the watch. 700 revolutions does that but you only want it just not stop between rotation cycles

I'm confused by this? I know there is debate on watch winders. Not trying to get into that one.

the rotor will only move when the winder is horizontal or close to it. Dial up does nothing rotating unless it moves laterally and winders don't do that

Just curious have you considered some of the custom made watch winder drawer inserts that seem to be out there? They seem to be made for custom closet type installations. Here is one example.

That's sort of what I'm going to do. Odd their site says height is 5.5” and a minimum of 6”
