Time and distance question for you all.

As we travel through the Cosmos on this tiny ball called Earth. Orbiting the Sun, whish is also hurtling around inside the Milky way, which is also hurtling through space.

I have circled the Sun 68 times.

Roughly in miles, how far have I travelled?

Give you a clue, it's further than you thought, but less than the distance to the nearest star.

The miles I've travelled on the Earth's surface relating to the actual distance is totally insignificant. 😊 As is 50,000,000 miles. 😂

Mean earth-sun distance is about 93 million miles. That’s your R in the circumference equation. C=2R*Pi.

68 years later…68*584M…is a lot.

The nearest star is about 4 light years away.

Further clue. The speed of Earth's orbit around the Milky Way, and the Milky Way hurtling through the universe is an incredible 502 miles per second.

I had this at our works quiz recently - nobody was even in the right ballpark. It's all a bit fuzzy due to alcohol that day and today, and there's a lot of numbers to crunch. Maybe I'm out by a factor of 1,000 🤷

My rounded recollection is that the Sun is travelling around the galaxy at at about 4.5 billion miles each year (it takes 250m years to orbit). But the galaxy is also moving and that gets us to 7.5 billion miles. If we add on our spin around the sun as mentioned above, then it's another 600 million so rounded down to 8 billion miles. X 68 = 554 billion miles.

I can't get my head around whether we need to add our orbit or not, maybe that 600m is double counting. It's making my head hurt.

One light year is 6 trillion miles so you've only travelled 1/12 of a light year, and our closest neighbour is 4¼ light years away.

Someone definitely needs to check my numbers.

1.077 trillion miles. So give or take😂, about 20% of a light year😱Can't get my head around that. The figure didn't include me spinning on Earth axis, or the rotation around the sun.
