So Much Shiny, So Much Sameness

Walking through a mall jewelry store, taking a quick peek at the watches, in and out before the sales people can "help" me.

All of it upscale of downscale and downscale of upscale. Nothing unique or interesting. Makes me thankful for the Internet and all the possibilities.

No wonder. Stores are there to sell stuff to the masses and something unique is harder to sell to the masses.

Retail malls centers are dinosaurs. Only if you have high foot traffic will a brick and mortar survive, and that's still a big 'maybe'. Add high leases and its a matter of time for many.

I’m not quite sure I fully appreciate the retail model. Before the rise in internet commerce, stores carried a more diverse selection of goods. But now they seem to carry a less diverse selection in stores. It seems logical to me that retailers would want to carry a diverse selection in store to better compete with online only retailers, but the opposite seems to be true. Why bother going to a Macy’s (or pick any other brick and mortar retailer) when half of the products they sell are online only?

I wrote about a local watch outlet that closed last year, the site had been a jewellers and watchmakers since 1840.

Some stores are guilty of trading the same old tat, but it's going to get harder for those who carry niche brands if we all buy online. I'm as guilty as anyone.

Considering people tend to buy the same old stuff, it makes sense to focus on that as a retail store as opposed to more quirky designs etc. There is a reason Rolex and so many other brands stick to often plain or safe designs. For all people complain they want something different they often gravitate back towards the familiar.

I go to Macy's and look, every now and then there will be something I like. But its few and far between.
