Why are steel case Casios so much? Why plague the simple person with painted plastic?

I really like the look of my A700W. It’s super thin, has a bright display and loud alarm…and fastens snugly and unobtrusively to my aging wrist. But…that chrome-painted plastic case! What an abomination (and don’t tell me it’s to keep costs down for bread-begging masses such as myself).

Image

On either side of my faux metal case Casio lies a lovely black PVD applied all stainless steel Speidel, and a warm and luxurious gold PVD applied all stainless steel Armitron Rubik. Both of these were not much more than the A700W in price, and in my opinion, are vastly more desirable based on their material construction alone.

So then one might ask, “why the hell don’t you just wear a resin F-91W instead and call it a satisfied day…effectively liberated from all the conundrums of such a baffling controversy? My answer: I’m not getting any younger and need something metallic on my wrist. After all…I’m a bitter-filled Generation X!

Image

So…despite the risk of gouging my A700W’s vulnerable case, I will forge on with my much-needed chore of edging my lawn with my trusty Big Red under the punishment of the high desert Sun; all in the name of poor man’s fashion and the inner desire to appear younger and sprightly around my sympathetically- gawking and nubile neighbors.

Do you hate the Casio chrome plated plastic case? Do you wonder why their metal case versions are so cost prohibitive? Is Casio often a blatant cash grab?

I kinda like Casio, but their material choices can be baffling to me when it comes to metal and plastics. I mean chromed plastic? Really?

I don't hate it but I completely agree with where you're coming from. I appreciate that A700W is light and extremely easy to wear; I can only imagine how much nicer it would feel if it was stainless steel.

Not only do I agree…but the metal bracelet is often a different hue than the case. My silver Royale is a prime example.

I think it would completely transform it to a watch with ‘quality feel’…sometimes lacking with Casio.

Touché.

Definitely agree with you on the types of materials used on some of Casio’s watches. I was looking at the Rubiks today because of the stainless steel construction.

I’m telling ya…that Rubik is sweet for the price. I think you’d be delighted if you got one.

I have recently baught the a158 and knew that for about 35$ can. I would receive a 35 $ piece of plastic fake metal watch... And boy do I love it! I understand what you describe but I think we choose those kinds of watches for the retro fun aspects of them. So of course there are better options out there but those casio vintage ones are still very resistant precise and have amazing history under their belts(straps)!

Yeah, but it would be even more vintage if the A158 had a steel case. Resin wasn’t introduced until the Ripley watch.

You are right about it! There are some good "real" vintage ones on ebay for that.
