So bought this from an online auction. I've been wanting a vintage Seiko diver - Turtle, Willard, Samurai etc. I saw this one come up in near mint condition an went all in on it. As best I can tell every thing is original including the strap. The strap is starting to show some age - if any one has some advice on taking care of it please let me know. I'm going to pick up a couple of aftermarket straps or a bracelet to use on it and put the original away for safe keeping.
I've dated it to either May 1988 or 1998. If anyone knows a way to figure out which one is the right production date I would appreciate knowing.

It's most likely made in 1988. Seiko superceded the 7002 movment with the 7S26 in 1996. So 1998 would be unlikely.
Your bezel insert looks period-correct, but aftermarket. I can tell by the lume pip. It's a good looking watch though. Congratulations! 👍
Nice one looks like it is in great condition 👍

Can you explain about the lume pip. Still trying to learn more, especially about vintage Seiko watches

If you look up genuine Seiko bezel inserts (SKX007 for example) and compare them to the aftermarket ones, it's usually the lume pip that gives them away. Aftermarket lume pips never look quite right.
Unfortunately, Seiko don't sell the inserts. Just the whole bezel, including the insert, for $100+. Hence the availability of aftermarket inserts.
Congrats! My vintage 6159-7001 says hello 👋

Awesome watch in pristine condition!
So talked to a friend who called a friend who is a "Seiko diver" expert who says that early production 7002s had bi-directional bezels with the larger pip and later ones had unidirectional ones with the smaller pip. So now I'm waiting to go home and see if it's unidirectional or bi-directional.

Yep, the 6159 I posted above is bidirectional since it's from Jan 1969
So my bezel is bi-directional. I understand this to mean it should have the larger pip. There should be a university course that gives credit to decipher what's authentic on some of the vintage watches. 🙄
