Opinion on business practice related to taxation

I recently went to purchase a watch from a specific EU based company, and noticed something odd in the purchase process. This is a practice I haven't...

Not sure if you noticed - I asked them about it, and they said this was done on purpose. They made it very clear they were aware that they were doing this, and justified it as "all customers pay the same price, EU and outside the EU. The only difference is, we [the seller] pay income tax for sales from the EU." (direct quote).

So yeah, seems like they're doing it on purpose. I don't think this is a bookkeeping issue.

Yeah - they're taking on even more complications here - they are handling different pricing and still account for 0 VAT or proper local VAT, so the motivation is definitely not "keep it simple".

This is different than that scenario though -

I've bought quite a few things from smaller vendors who just charge VAT everywhere (basically ignore international clients), since it's complicated to handle it. I don't love that, but also completely understand that "selling as if you're local" always is reasonable for small companies.

In this case, the seller went out of their way to develop custom shopping software that specifically hides this and elevates the price of the item to compensate while setting VAT to 0. I've never seen that elsewhere...

They lost me as a customer due to it... though I'm open to having my opinion changed. At this point, though, I don't see myself ever buying one of their watches now.

Bracelet is really nice - I actually like it quite a bit more than most integrated ones I've tried (without going into the $10k+ range, at least).

Finish is extremely nice - especially for the price point. The inner edge has a slight chamfer and is smooth, so no sharp points anywhere. Extremely nice articulation in the bracelet, so it drapes perfectly. I personally like the polished center links mixed with the brushed links - and with the hardened coating, I'm not too worried about durability there.

The end links do stick out very slightly past the lugs, so I would say it probably will fit very nicely if you have more than around a 6.5"/16.5cm wrist, but if you're smaller than that, I'd avoid it. This wouldn't be an issue except that the first link doesn't quite clear the case, so it can't fold under completely (hence the very slight protrusion there).

Fit is "good" but not perfect (ideally I'd remove about 1/3 of a link more) for me with the butterfly - but they also have the option of buying a clasp with micro adjustments to replace it. I actually really like the included clasp from a looks perspective, though, so I'm not sure whether I'd try the other.

They do also sell some rubber strap options for this, though, which I plan on buying, but haven't yet.

I like the separation and protection afforded by using pillows and dividers, but I do agree, there is something to be said for not having slots to fill or run out of!

Nice ideas! Right now, I was thinking about having a woodworker commission something custom, but just trying to see if there's a better option.

This is going on a shelf - basically like a bookshelf (about 11"/28cm deep, 10"/25cm high).
