Certina Ratchet Diver Extension Loose

I have the Certina DS Action Diver Titanuim. The clasp is fitted with a ratchet diver extension. The extension I feel is very loose. If the watch lays just sligtly down to my hand, it easily extends the extension the whole way open without much force if I flex my hand. I.e. it happens all the time which is quite annoying indeed.

Anyone who owns a Certina with this type of clasp, or have a similar clasp? What are your experiences, does the extension stay or is it loose for you as well?

I have sent the watch to Certina, but they returned without doing anything to it. The watch is a couple of months old.

Show the inside might help more. My guess is that the ratchet teeth are gunked up. This happens with ratchet wrenches, bicycle shifters. Crud clogs the normally sharp detents.

The ratchet teeth are quite clean. I can see some wear on the teeth, can it be so that titanium is not a very good material for this type of ratchet as it deforms quite easily?

I’ve got the same watch, but haven’t had any issues with mine (no yet anyway). Wherever I set the extension is where it stays.

I can close it without too much pressure, but it won’t extend without holding both buttons down. Here’s a pic of mine for comparison.

If it’s not holding in place I would send it back again. You’re still under warranty so I’d ask them to replace it.

Actually been thinking of swapping mine over to a NATO instead.

Hi! Did you get this solved? My Certina also has this exact same issue (same watch as you have) And is about 1 month old, been doing it since day one.

I have a suspicion that the teeth inside the clasp isnt sharp or big enough or something..

I noticed that our watches seems to have teeth on both sides also, whilst @AussieWatchGuy only has teeth on one side, maybe an updated clasp?

Edit: nevermind, i saw the teeth now.. need to get glasses :D

Hi, @a.quvist

Yes, I shipped it to Certina through my retailer again and fortunately they replaced the entire clasp the second time which solved the issue perfectly. I think the retailers description of the issue was.. somewhat lacking the first time they shipped it, for they only replaced the locking of the clasp itself, not the extension part. But the second time I made sure the issue was better described.

The clasp has never spontaneously opened since, not even under quite a bit of load.

So my recommendation is to take it back to your retailer and ask them to have Certina replace the clasp.

I hope the issue gets resolved for you aswell, for now I totally love the watch!

Best regards

Ah, i need to get it to Sweden again then, i will call the reseller later today and see what they recommend.

I wonder if the spring inside the ratchet might be to weak or something but it is really annoying when it changes size with bare minimum pressure on it. But its nice to see there is a fix for it, otherwise i would probably have sold it soon :)

A follow up on this, so i took it to my reseller here and i received a new clasp that works flawless now 🙂 It took about 2 weeks from me handing it over to getting the watch back. I got to keep the old clasp too!

Also, I took the old clasp apart today and found that there was some kind of rubber/glue residue on the 2 metal prods that normally should catch the ratched teeth, i cleaned that off and voila.. i now have a spare working clasp!

Nice to hear that your clasp works again!

Had the same feeling as you that the constant extending of the clasp made the whole wearing experince ruined.

Good that you got to keep the old one, unfortunately Certina kept mine so I cannot repair it to have an exta.

Hopefully they see the issue and take quality assurance measures to ensure the watches arent shipped like this in the future!

As a matter of interest, I have 2 Certina watches, the DS Action day/ date and a 43mm DS Action Diver. Both of them arrived covered in clear stickers.. some were tiny and covering the clasp pushers.. in fact one was so small that I didn't notice it and it stayed on the strap for a couple of months.. it ended up being the culprit in making the clasp on the day/ date not functioning properly.. just a thought.
