Help! Legit Check Bingo

Anyone who has spent any time on warch Reddit can tell you that one of the most common posts on there is the legit check post. And I swear almost every one has something wrong or lacks common sense in some way. The faults are so often the same that I felt like I could fill out a bingo card. Well, now I’m making that a reality. I have 5 spaces left to fill up and I’m out of ideas. Which is why I need your help!

I want to clarify something right quick tho: This about the faulty investigation by the poster, not the quality of a given watch asking to be checked. Because we can’t expect watch literacy at an enthusiast or higher level from a person who metaphorically just comming by the shot

"Buy the seller"

Usually in the replies as if it's some sort of panacea. Poor advice.

It’s not a panacea, but it’s very valuable advice. It’s true.

Personally, I think it's terrible advice.

For me "buying the seller" means paying a higher price rather than doing the hard work of assessing watches yourself and finding a good one at a good price. I.e. Outsourcing the judgement to somebody else.

The problem with that is that:

1. You remain ignorant about the watch you're buying and have no way of testing whether the seller's judgement is right because you're still ignorant.

2. You put yourself at the mercy of a seller who will always have different interests from you. Even the best seller, who wants to maintain their good reputation isn't on your team.

Look at the recent scandals involving the big global auction houses and watches. You'd have thought that buying from one of them would be the ultimate example of "buying the seller" but it isn't. Profit is a powerful motive.

IMO, The 20 populated bingo squares above can all be categorized in the following 3 squares:

  1. Bad photography quality/skills/judgement.

  2. Lack of photo(s) supplied

  3. Malevolently-intentioned and/or supiciously-ignorant seller/poster.

I would add a 4th here. “Poor consumer street smarts”. And Bingo would be boring with only 3-4 squares
