The Tampax watch

Nomos are trying very hard to convince me that their Ahoi is the only watch I’ll ever need. I’m supposed to be able to go with it to the theater, the office, or even the pool. The list of possible activities that I can engage with while wearing my Ahoi is supposedly endless and I'm even suggested to never to take it off.

But for me it was a strong reminder of the Tampax advertisements from the 70's. These ads extolled the liberating effects (for women) of Tampax, which was supposed to enable a mind boggling variety of activities, which in most cases necessitated wearing white clothes, a pool or owning a yacht.

The problem is that I don’t live in the 70’s anymore, I don’t want to wear on my wrist something that I’m not going to be able to take off (isn’t this the exact description of a manacle?), and I’m also not a woman, and I don't wear white a lot - although I wouldn't refuse a yacht or a pool if it was offered as part of the deal.

The truth is that I do like my Nomos Ahoi, but for me it’s more like an Rx medicine that can only be consumed in measured amount and under supervision. I can wear it for a few days every month, but it’s definitively not something I want to use on a daily basis, even if I’m supposed to be able to dive to 200m deep with it, or if it can really bring me flashbacks from the best times in my life.

I like its splash of red and simplistic but not quite Bauhaus dial. The dimensions are also the right size for me, but wearing it all the time would drive me up the wall.

Was it the color that caused the association or the advertising text? Or both? 😉

The text. I was reading it on Nomos product page when it clicked and I made the association of the possible activities with the jingles I remembered from the 70's.

C’mon. The SKX is the original tampon watch.

Oh dear me, you have a yacht?

As much as I like German austerity, and my Knot looks very similar to a Nomos, I wouldn't want to wear it all the time. It's a design you really have to be into to begin with.
