How a 1962 chronograph saved the day.

The Dan Henry 1962 Racing chronograph is literally a savior. The first time it saved me was a year ago when I contemplated buying a MoonSwatch.

It was when Swatch was still assuring us that the plastic wonders will be made available for online purchase, and I was really thinking about getting one until I realized that I already owned something better, namely the Dan Henry 1962 Racing Chronograph with its twisting lugs and three sub-dials, which at least are placed in the correct location instead of being pushed up as if someone had just kicked the chrono in its balls.

So yes, I was saved from doing a stupid mistake because the DH has a much better dial and its steel case mean that it probably won't decompose into compost within a few months.

Later on Swatch decided that I was too unworthy and needed to physically get myself to one of their shop, like it's some kind of pilgrimage, which is something I intend to do like never ever.

It also has a much better case back which is more pleasing to look at and which won't leave a tattoo on my wrist (for some reason we Jews have an aversion to being tattooed on our wrists, go figure).

This week the Dan Henry saved me again, and this time it saved me from playing the one watch contest game, which I don't understand but it's probably because I'm an idiot. Anyway just by the virtue of being in my collection it gained its turn on my wrist and is allowing me to win my own game of wearing a different watch every day.

Which to me sounds a lot more interesting than the alternative, after all what would I be writing about every morning if I was shackled to the same watch for a month?

I’m impressed with Dan Henry as well. I have the 1964 and I find myself reaching for it over watches that cost more in my collection. The only drawback was the 19mm lug width, which forced me to buy a couple extra DH straps. And those were high quality too.

TBH the DH has its own share of flaws but they are all in the category of small annoyances with which I can live.

There are no perfect watches, even for watches many times more expensive than DH. Seiko has some of the worst straps/bracelets out there.

Dan Henry is a good way to get introduced into the world of retro and vintage watches without falling into the pitfalls of buying and maintaining an actual vintage watch.

Occasionally I look at the 1962 when I browse Chrono24 and surprisingly it actually accrued in value since it was discontinued.
