Watch enthusiast for almost 30 years with ~50 or so pieces in my collection. Had been focusing primarily on more affordable Japanese, Swiss, German, Russian and Chinese watches. However have slowly come to the realization that I am now beginning to prefer quality vs. quantity, and looking at narrowing down to less than 10 very nice pieces. Lean towards sport/tool watches vs. dress. Mix of modern and vintage, with oldest piece being a 1965 Rolex 1605 Datejust.
Other hobbies include tech, Apple, high end audio, BBQ, SAABs, whiskey and traveling. I share my home with my family, 4 cats and a chinchilla.
Have worn a watch my entire life, from cheap hand-wound watches when I was very young, to LED/quartz, to now higher-end mechanical watches. My watch epiphany was changing my mind at the last minute in buying an Invicta 9937 vs. a knockoff Rolex Sub. Also a fan of the Apple Watch, and will often Schwarzkopf while at home.
Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?
Hand-me-down hand-wound Timex from my dad.
Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?
My 1965 Rolex Datejust is a birth year piece that I acquired in early 2022. I have been wanting a Rolex for quite some time, but was searching for something with meaning behind it. Not only was it produced in 1965, but according to the caseback stamp and serial number, it was most likely produced in 2Q65, which is the same quarter as my actual birthdate.
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
Don’t buy a more affordable watch as a substitute for your grail - buy it because you like it for its own style. Be patient when looking for your grail, but be prepared to act fast when the time finally presents itself! Also, don’t buy yourself a watch and justify it to your partner by using the “I bought it to give to my kids someday” excuse. Just buy it for yourself.
Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?
Tudor, Omega, Grand Seiko.
Q: What is your grail watch and why?
Unsure at the moment. At one point it was a two-tone Sub with blue dial, but that crush has passed. Would really like a Milgaus or Aqua Terra. Would not turn down a Royal Oak but I would not pay for one either.
