Everything I read about this watch (spb143) is that you can get a better watch for the same money. What watches out there for the $1200 and under price point are better? I’m having a hard time finding any.
For that price, ı would get a Hamilton murph-expedition, seiko alpinist-sharp edge, sinn 556 or divers, can prefer microbrands like farer and studio underdog
I mostly see positive reviews re value for money. I have this Seiko and a Mido Ocean Star Tribute that retails for about the same. Both are excellent but positive points for the Seiko SPB143 are the 20mm lug width and the drilled lugs. I use the bracelet, a thick leather strap and various NATOs/Erikas Original straps. Andfor completeness the bracelet of the Mido wins points for on the fly adjustment.

I’ve been looking for a Sinn556i but they are all $1500 or more now 😭
That's why I don't read or watch reviewers or at least I don't pay attention to them, if you like the watch buy it. If I based myself on what a reviewer or YouTuber says, I think I wouldn't have a single watch.

It’s the talk of extremely bad accuracy from the Seiko 6r movement that is holding my up on it. I don’t mind losing or gaining 10 seconds a day. But I’ve been reading allot of people are seeing over a minute a day on these. 😢

Exactly. Many of them are just that (subjective opinions and empty comments that have no facts behind them). I hear that all the time that “there are better watches for the money”. I am always like what watches then?

Exactly the reason for this post. So many say you can do better, we’ll show me 💁🏻♂️😂
I have the SPB143 and wear it regularly. I think most of the criticism of the watch is overblown. Mine has been functional and reliable. It runs +4 -- +6 sec per day. I've enjoyed it on the bracelet and a few NATOs. It's attractive and well-finished.
Eventually I did upgrade to the Uncle Seiko bracelet. But otherwise, nothing but love for the SPB143.
I have heard mostly great things about the 143! I think people didn't appreciate the price jump "for a Seiko" but it's an awesome watch. I was shopping for a used one but I ended up getting something similar and put it on pause.
If you like it buy it! Ignore what others say. I personally love mine, the dimensions and case design are great along with the awesome sunburst dial. Accuracy on mine is around +6-8sec a day.
I’ve considered them, I’m just not a fan of the powermatic 80 movements.
I have to say as a fanboy of Tissot and Swatch Group brands - the Powermatic80 and it's varients in other brands has taken a big bit of enthusiasm out of the watches that house those movements. The tick is just somehow odd from a lower or higher beat movement in a way I find jarring. Totally a me thing probably.

It really is a shame to me, the watches and cases are beautiful. But knowing there is a movement with plastic parts in important areas makes the watch feel disposable to me. I know some of the variants are better then the others, but just the fact that it is even done in any of the movements puts me off.
I love the SPB143 but, in that price range, I'd say you would get more watch for your money with a Farer or CW. Unfortunately, Seiko isn't the value proposition it used to be a few years back and their prices don't stop creeping up... 🥺
I won't argue that there are better made watches for the same money. My Doxa Sub 200 is $200 less than the SPB143 at retail, and the Doxa is just a better watch in every techincal aspect. That said, I greatly prefer the Seiko to the Doxa. I wouldn't recommed shopping based on specs alone. First and foremost, I would get the watch you like the look of the most. Who cares if the specs aren't quite up to par if you really like the watch?
First, I think most reviewers who say that are comparing the SPB143 against other, older Seikos that used to be less aspirationally priced. People have a hard time getting over the fact that Seiko has pushed up its retail prices over the past 3-4 years.
Second, you should not pay retail for a Seiko. The SPB143 is widely available from a number of outlets all over the world. You should be targeting somewhere in the ballpark of $900 for that watch - NEW - and less if you get one of the variants that is not on a bracelet.
I agree with what a couple others have said, if you like it buy it. There may be "better value" alternatives out there, but in my experience if a watch doesn't have that X factor (and I don't mean prospex x) then it can have a better movement, price, specs etc all it likes ,I'm not gonna bond with it
