What’s in store for 2024?

2023 was my first calendar year of watch collecting. I got my first “real” watch for Christmas of 2022. My Seiko 5. In February I bought my wife and I matching G-SHOCK Lovers Editions. May I received my Tissot PRX for my 29th birthday. For Christmas I bought myself a Hamilton Khaki. It was a great year.

In 2024 I want to break into what I call Entry Level Luxury. I have a couple of watches in mind. I want to take my collection to the next level and break into the luxury scene. I say entry level luxury because there is no way I can afford a Tudor or a Rolex or an Omega yet. I’ll get there eventually, and I don’t want to finance it. So, here’s what I have in mind.

The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date - $2,250

The Longines Spirit Zulu Time 39mm - $3,150

For an Entry Level Luxury Watch, which one would you pick?

The Longines, all day long. It's a stunning watch. I tried it about a month ago and it's just so lovely.

Nothing wrong with Oris at all and the big crown pointer date is an excellent watch but I would also agree Longines all day. They have so much history AND are really hot at the moment with some killer pieces such as not only the Zulu Time but also the legend diver reissue which I’m a huge fan of. To me, the Zulu is definitely above the entry level point and is a multigenerational heirloom watch anyone would be proud to have in their collection. If you want a slightly more “entry level” and more quickly attainable model consider the Longines Heritage Sector Dial (or really honestly anything from the Heritage line but man that sector dial is perfect and super hot right now and for under 2k what a steal). You can’t go wrong with either but Longines hands down wins this one.

Also, you say there is no way you can afford a Tudor just yet but there are many Tudors to be had for less than the Longines Zulu Time. I have a 1926 Opaline dial I love that I scored lightly used for under 1500 a couple years ago and you can get amazing deals on the old style smiley versions of the black bay now that the new in house movement 36s are out. I would stick with Tudor and Longines for sure over Oris although again nothing wrong with many Oris watches which I also admire but I would spend my money on Tudor or Longines first for sure.

I remember the first time I saw it and I was like “oh man I need this watch one day.” Thanks for your input!

This helps so much. I appreciate you a ton. Longines has been on my radar since I started even looking at real watches. I LOVE the sector dial as well, but something about having a GMT in my collection seems important. Haha

You should save up and get the Zulu Time for sure then. It was honestly one of the best watches of last year hands down and I think it’s an instant classic. So many GMTs are trying to be or wanting to be a Rolex but the Longines is its own totally unique and gorgeous design that I think will keep getting even more popular the next few years.

You're welcome, enjoy whatever you decide.

Oris big crown is currently my grail hoping to get it in 2024 too

What do you mean real watch? If you mean you got your first luxury watch it’s the correct statement.

They are all watches, digital, smart, quartz etc.

Congratulations!

By “real” I mean mechanical/automatic/quartz. I regularly wore an Apple Watch. Which by all definitions is a “real” watch, but it’s not an automatic and it’s not a mechanical.

Zulu Zulu Zulu. Looking at one today, that's what I'm aiming at now

That heritage sector dial is definitely a watch one can fall in love with quickly.
