Are cuf flinks overdressed?

My brother-in-law and sister-in-law are going to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary. They made clear that they want a more casual leaning dress code: no suits and no neckties.

My children and I are preparing for the weekend and the eight hour journey. A minute ago, my 14-year-old came in asking me whether cuff links would be overdressed. I confirmed that they would probably be. He hit hard then: «Well dad. You're into trouble. Unless you wear the Tissot your watches don't fit under the cuffs without the links.»

I mean, come one! It is such a small detail. How can a 14-year-old be so thoughtful and detail-oriented?

I guess that I really either take cuff links or the white Citizen with me.

Too cold 🥶. Would be the perfect summer solution.

Short sleeved shirt with a blazer?

Their wishes are not rules. Erring on the side of formality is to err on the side of caution and civility.

·

the commenters are glossing over that your 14 y/o has an absolute eye for detail! so sweet to see!

People still wear cuff links?

·

You can wear your shirt with cufflinks with the collar open without a tie and a good leather jacket, I love cufflinks too

No way, you guys have single link cuffs over there? Those are unobtainium here where it's all double (stupid fold in half) cuffs here. Name suppliers pleez.

I don't see the problem here. When we visit friends for an informal afternoon through evening get together, with a simple meal, I'll usually wear a patterned shirt with cufflinks but no tie. I'm usually the smartest dressed but it's never overdressed.

the choice of shirt will dictate whether or not the cufflinks are too much. so simply stay away from very plain or business like shirts.

i'd add a bright pocket square to the jacket pocket if you feel a bit underdressed without a tie.

personally i ditched ties years ago , except for formal eveningwear. never looked back.
