I have been into watches for a couple of decades, but during the pandemic, we decided to share the hobby and she got on board. Our deal is, if one gets a watch the other one does as well. It helps when we get a watch we can both wear!
The answer is tricky partly due to this… Watch Company A rates their diver to 100m. They say it can do 100m but have nothing to back that up. Watch Company B uses a COSC certified movement, and possibly has other certificates to back up its 100m claim. One watch company’s 100m is not necessarily the same as another watch company. For example, Omega uses a METAS certification on their dive models, so the watches are actually rated to withstand 25% more depth than is stated.
Limited quantity runs when they order from their factory. They can’t buy in huge bulk because each strap has to fit that brand and model precisely. Think about it… how many customers are out there for them that want a red strap for their 1990s Rolex Pepsi. In reality, not many. So they order low production runs that cost them more.
I’ll typically wear an Apple Watch when working out, but occasionally I’ll wear a sport luxury watch. They’re built for use… if I can’t use them then what’s the point.
