Icons Series: Jacques Cousteau ~DOXA

Founded in 1889 DOXA, was predominantly a company known for its dress watches. It would be the rise of dive watches such as the Rolex Submariner and Blancpain's Fifty Fathoms in the mid to late 50s that would plant the seed for DOXA’s first icon.

Years of development to build a truly remarkable watch would follow and by 1967 the Sub 300T was released. It would, however, be a French diving legend born in 1910 that would germinate that seed of chance. Turning the Sub 300T into the icon we know today.

Victor Kiam spokesman of Remington famously said of its electric shaver “I liked it so much, I bought the company" Diving legend Jacques Cousteau didn’t go quite that far for DOXA. He did, however, negotiate to become an exclusive distributor for the DOXA Sub, range.

The infamous and often polarising orange dial would soon become a familiar fixture on television sets around the world, as Cousteau himself explored the blue planet in “The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau” all whilst wearing the DOXA. As Cousteau’s legend grew so did his and others' love of DOXA, Forever enshrining the Sub 300T as a triple threat icon, not only one of watchmaking or diving but also one of design.

Fast forward to the modern era DOXA’s dive watches have become a firm favourite with collectors and enthusiasts alike.

I for one love the DOXA Sub range, what are your thoughts on DOXA?

Thanks

OK, @watstoki, I held as much as I could but now I HAVE to ask you. When will you start to sell your work?

Do you know these sites that sell high-definition printings?

Just send the URL if you already did, please.

Thanks!

Very kind of you, I just do these for fun at the moment. It’s a nice way to celebrate my love of watches, many of which I will probably never get my hands on. Glad people like them though that brings me a lot of joy.

I really want one, but a few things hold me back ( for now). I like the 300t a lot but the design doesn't lend to a daily, for me. The Sub 200 would be a perfect watch if they hadn't done that ridiculous 19mm lug width while the bracelet is 20mm, and it needs better lume. Maybe I'll get over that stuff and pull the trigger, maybe Doxa will listen and update those things. I like that it carries the style of the 11804-4, and the beads of rice bracelet is something else.

Not many companies are more iconic in the dive world than Doxa, they developed the Helium escape valve with Rolex in 1967.
