Authentication - At what price point does it start to matter?

I know budgets are subjective, and that you don’t buy the watch, you buy the seller. But independent authentication helps both parties. So the question is, at what price point does it start to matter? Regardless of Vintage or modern.

Depends on the watch. I am far less worried about obscure brands vs. bigger brands. If I am spending $2500 plus on a brand I know is knocked off regularly, I want to personally inspect it, otherwise if that is not available, a third party expert.

It's a waste of money and effort if you're authenticating a watch that almost certainly wasn't faked. I don't have to pay Ebay $80 dollars to verify that I'm buying a Timex.

True. At what price point would you consider doing it then?

It wouldn't be about price, it would be about likelihood of fakes, that's what I'm saying. Rolexes are the most faked watch in the world, but I would be more likely to verify a 2023 Submariner than a 1978 Datejust or something (though I would verify both because, again, Rolex.)

I think you're looking for a number answer but this has more to do with knowing the landscape of the watch world.

Thanks mate. I was looking for a number answer, because (I think) first time buyers of a pre-owned luxury watch will want authentication regardless of the brand. Overtime, we all wisen up, but even so Authentication remains core to most transactions. True that Rolexes are most faked, but so are casios, funnily enough.

The simple answer is don't buy if you have any concern about authenticity.

Luxury watches aren't necessities, so buy new or stick to a price your comfortable being ripped-off at.

For me, it’s income based. It depends on how much funds I can set aside while maintaining my economic responsibilities.
