Kurono Tokyo Grand Urushi X Glenfiddich Grand Yozakura launch

So last week I was fortunate enough to attend a new whiskey launch, the Glenfiddich 29 years Grand Yozakura. First thing that came to mind was “which watch best suits the event?” and I had only one answer in mind, my latest precious purchase, the Kurono Tokyo Grand Urushi, and boy did I enjoyed every second that night had to offer!

This watch has always been one of the most unique watch I’ve ever experienced. The dial plays sooooo beautifully in any dimly lit room, revealing the Hamon pattern in the best ways possible. Took some wrist shots (pretty bad ones whoops) and just wanted to share this amazing experince with my fellow crunchers 🥂

And for those who are new to Kurono Tokyo, this brand was introduced by an independent japnese watchmaker, Mr Hajime Asaoka. Initially, he only produce pure handcrafted timepieces, but then over the years he wanted other people to enjoy and experience his designs in a lower price bracket, hence his high-grade Miyota driven Kurono Tokyo watches. This dial in particular is finished with a specific lacquer called Urushi, which requires “up to two months to dry and prep” so basically a spec of dust that landed during the drying process often results in the dial being thrown away.

In conclusion: Japanese watch making hits different 🔥

p.s. Stay happy and healthy yall and as always, drink only in moderation. Cheers! 🥂

@IceCreamMan WHOOPS yes indeed! My mind is not at the best of states right now.

Wow, beautiful watch! I love Japanese design language.

Nice! This particular whiskey has matured for 29 years in american oak before its finishing in Awamori casks. Awamori is one of the oldest alcoholic drinks in Japan, hailing from and distilled (from Indica Thai rice) in Okinawa - also famous for the battle and Karate Kid). But you probably posted principally for the watch i guess...not much to add there - looks good!

Great watch…how would you compare it to Grand Seiko in terms of value?

Honestly, they are two different beasts. GS has great dials and finishing and their movement technology is 🔥. So in my POV if you are into Reliable and high tech movement and Great dial and finishing, go for GS

However, Kurono is almost purely based on looks (dial , hands, case finishing ) and their movement is a high grade miyota. In my POV if you want somethine unique and have a strong take on japanese culture and that you dont mind a third party movement, i strongly recommend you try Kurono Tokyo. (And they are less than half the orice of a GS!) .

Note: Kurono watches are difficult to obtain due to high demand and low supply (I mean they r a microbrand) so getting your hands on one might be quite tricky. All the best!
