JLC Reverso Hybris Mechanica Calibre 185 - A Watch with 4 Faces!
I love Reverso and recently bought the Duoface Tribute version. I was curious about what the other more extreme versions of the Reverso JLC may have made and thus did some browsing on their official website, and then I ran into this crazy piece, Reverso Hybris Mechanica Calibre 185, a watch they introduced back in 2021.
I have never imagined that a watch can have 4 faces, but this Reverso is exactly this! In addition to the typical 2 faces that many Reverso versions also have, this one has 2 more faces. The 3rd and the 4th are the two sides of the cradle. So many complications are included in this watch.
On the 1st face, in addition to time, there is a perceptual calendar and a flying tourbillon. On the 2nd face, time display is in a different format, and there is a minute repeater with no pause for quarter hour. On the 3rd face, there is a display of moon's phases, the distance between the Moon and Earth, the orbit of the Moon, Earth and the Sun, time of Lunar or Solar eclipses, all in the Northern Hemisphere. The 4th face shows similar information but in the Southern Hemisphere.
How did any watchmakers achieve such a complicated watch is totally beyond me. Obviously my iPhone can easily do all these, but there are no integrated circuits or any electronic components inside this watch. Everything inside this watch is mechanical, mostly just wheels and gears! And the crown is on the watch itself, and you do not wind the cradle. Where does the energy come from that drives the complications on the 2 sides of the cradle? The technical skills demonstrated on this watch is totally speechless! And they packed all these complications into a single timepiece!
This watch is obviously very, very expensive, as even a single complication from those noted above can already cost a fortune! And this watch has them all! But JLC does not state the price on their website. So, I was curious about it and googled the price. I had already expected a very high price, but when I saw the price, I almost fell from my chair! Some said it is around US$1.6 million! I won't be able to get one even in my next life! 😂 But I guess I can still appreciate how fantastic an achievement it is without owning it.
I love watches and have been collecting inexpensive watches for over 20 years. Most are quartz watches but a few are automatic. None cost me more than C$300. Since two years ago, I started collecting...

I believe it might been even higher at the time, but you might be correct. If I recall correctly, 10 pcs was made and the watch made of platina weights around 1 kg.

Yes, I also saw some said the price was around US$1.6 million, while one said $1.8 million at the time. Given the crazy amount, I thought the difference was just a "rounding error"! 😂 By the way, I corrected this in my original post now.
There are sales taxes in Canada. If this watch is sold in Canada, the taxes alone could buy almost 20 regular steel Reverso!
Only 10 pieces have been sold. Not a surprise. One must be very, very wealthy but is also into watches before even consider it!

That counts too! I think you likely have the same enjoyment as those ten owners. I imagine most of them won't wear the watch too often but rather put the watch in a safe or an exhibition case and view it that way. You likely had the same pleasure as that of the owner! 😂
