Is it still worth getting a panerai today?

Hey guys, have been captivated by the history and design of panerai. However, I have heard how many feel the brand and its products have been on the decline and downward spiral.

Is it still worth getting one today? The model I’m interested in is the PAM915 and PAM1313.

This very well might be my first and last big watch purchase where $ is concerned.

Looking forward to your comments!

Despite all the the declining in popularity of Panerai (no one else to blame but themselves) in recently years, they still make good quality watches. I dont know what you mean by "is it still worth getting" mean, if by buying as an investment then no. But if to wear/enjoy it then yes. Keep in mind that Panerai watches will not hold the same value (as it used to) once you walk out of the AD. If money isn't a factor for you and you want a brand new watch then straight to the AD, if not, I'd recommend looking up pre-owned, there are plenty to choose and you will save a lot of money.

Good luck!

You like you buy.

PAM is quite cheap if you buy used, but even new ones you can get decent discount from AD.

Panerai has the iconic and instantly recognisable design, and heritage too. Not many watches out there have all that.

I think you’ll get a lot of polarized opinions on the brand here and in other online places where nerds hide from actual social interaction, myself included.

You can Google “p.9010 movement” and find articles from Perezcope and others that point out Panerai’s recent movement downgrading and shortcomings. From movement finishing to the removal of hacking seconds to outright deceit at times, it’s disappointing.

That being said, no one… NO ONE should buy a Panerai for the movement tech or finishing. You buy a Panerai for the aesthetics. If you like the PAM1313, go for it. Don’t let anyone here or anywhere else convince you that it’s not beautiful on your wrist and you’re not beautiful on the inside. Live your life. Panerai is about a feeling as much as Omega divers and Casio digital. If it gives you the feels when you wear it, then buy it.

Worth the $$? Well no watch is worth the money in 2023. It’s worth it if it makes you happy. Brand new, used, grey… it’s worth what YOU are willing to pay.

I like them, buy would not buy retail.

I say yes to that PAM915 with aclarity.

Pick one that you like the most; you only really need one Panerai in your collection. That Manifftura 8 day movement is a fantastic choice! I've owned several Panerai models over the years and I've loved them all. After distilling my collection down about 10-15 years ago, I settled on one favorite to keep; my PAM270. I wear it a lot (wearing it today) and I enjoy it a lot.

Seikos are great watches. And the Pannerais are no exception.

I'm teasing of course. I think you'll be very happy with it. Some might say they're overpriced, but I think if you can rock a Pannerai, you should. Not everyone can, but on those who can they look remarkably good, and unlike any other watch. Which deserves respect in of itself!

Thanks Adi! Perhaps my thoughts are that should I only have 10k to spend on a watch (and I mean my first and last 10k), would I want to spend it on a panerai or would that 10k be better spent on something like a moonwatch 3861 or grand seiko.

Very well said, I guess my dilemma is whether I would be content with a panerai being the only high end watch I own given limited financial resources. Other watches that I enjoy and are considering would be the moonwatch, seamaster, bb58, grand seikos.

Thank you valleykilmers for your thoughts! Really appreciate it💯I’ll give this serious thought!

Thanks SurferJohn! The PAM270 looks sharp!

Thanks for sharing RelojeriaCarrion! I certainly think I’d rock a panerai. Love the freshness, clean dial and the instantly recognisable aesthetics. Then again beauty is in the eye of the beholder 👀

For what's it's worth, I got a PAM00915 this year and it's been awesome. Would I take a hit if I decided to sell, yes. But it really is that way for everything but Rolex.

I do not have any plans to sell though.

Nice! Do you have any wrist shots to share? 😃

Also, any regrets whatsoever regarding user experience? In particular: does it have hacking seconds, does it run extremely fast on a full wind?

With 10k you could buy both (pre-owned) speedy and Pam :)

Well that’s more of a philosophical question. I get it though, wanna get 1 really good luxury piece.

I guess it depends on your style and when you would wear. If you’re a jeans a T person then the Panerai is perfectly at home. If you’re dressing up here and there then maybe a SMP300 or Aqua Terra would be a better fit. SMP300, Speedmaster, and BB58 have multiple companies that make aftermarket steel bracelets which will help either increase or decrease the shiny/dressier qualities. With the Panerai you might be limited to leather, rubber, and fabric straps but again, if your a casual person that will look great.

No issues on user experience. I wish it had a display case back but that did not keep me from buying.

Mine happens to have hacking although I've heard some don't? Accuracy has been fine, between +2 to +6. It has more variance than my pelagos which keeps a very steady +2.

Also, and this is more of a personal preference, I am a huge fan of having date. With Panerai, I think the models with dates don't look as good. The classic luminor marina checks all my boxes. So I sacrificed usability due to aesthetics.

If I had to have one watch, it would have a date function. Something to think about.

Haha yes I’m mainly in joggers and an oversized shirt throughout the week so I guess panerai would be most at home! Thank you, I feel I’m in a position to make a better decision before panerai increases their prices on 1st May!

You’re rocking it! Good to know accuracy is on point for a piece with 8 days power reserve.

Yes I do find a date function exceptionally useful tho fully agree it looks a bit out of place on a panerai 😂

Thanks again for all the helpful comments! I’m hoping to make a decision before panerai increases pricing on 1st May.

I bought a 177 last year, second hand. I went for titanium as I was concerned about weight. Those who know will be aware it’s manual wind which was a first for me. The exhibition casback is nice too, but I don’t often look at it. I bought via WF as I was so concerned about fakes on the SH market. There’s no way I’d buy new, especially as I’ve still lost a small amount of money on it. Of all my collection Im still wearing it the most, even more than my GMT2.

Thanks for sharing! Yes very good point especially since panerais will surely take a hit once out of AD

Late to this post but I for one am a Panerai fan for its history and unique design, particularly the Luminor Marina PAM422! Hope you acquired one! 🤙❤️
