Rolex Air King Review

The Air-King may be the entry model to men’s Rolex but you are definitely not getting anything that’s inferior. Its 34mm case looks no less than perfect if not slightly rugged on ladies. Retailing at about fifteen thousand ringgit is extreme value since the Air-King shares the same 3130 movement with the more expensive Submariner. More importantly, the AK has been around for a good 70 years as a dedication from Hans Wilsdorf to commemorate the bravery of British air pilots.

This oyster captured me by surprise when I was deciding on whether to join the Submariner or Luminor bandwagon as we are now in the age of larger watches. Fortunately, I was particularly drawn to the Air-King’s understatement and simplicity. However, I prefer the even cleaner design on vintage AKs (reference 5500) where less is more because ‘Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified’ just makes things somewhat cluttered.

After having lived a year with the Air-King, it has been a more than positive experience as it is the one that has spent significantly more time on my wrist than other watches. Credits can go to the cleverly designed oyster bracelet making it so convenient in putting on and taking off. The AK’s weight too is spot on, by no means a light but possesses a heft that oozes quality. All that makes this watch seriously comfortable on the wrist resulting in often being unnoticed as you get by the day.

The AK is no less than perfect therefore I would not like it more if it were bigger, bulkier or shinier. There’s just something about having the Air-King as a companion.. from its brilliant proportions giving it an excellent stance to the sounds it makes as you move. All in all, buy the watch that defines you and not the one that is favoured by others. The Air-King will never be a disappointing choice for anyone’s first watch, be it a graduation or to commemorate an important day.

Cheers! I'm you would 🤝

I love this generation of Air King as well. It's got the maxi-case despite the 34mm so it wears slightly bigger, and that classic Air King text. Only issue I have for not pulling the trigger on a white dial version of this is the hands - they look too thin and small.

After all is a Rolex so is hard to go wrong with it ... is mostly all down to personal taste in what you like or like less on this model.

For me i love the looks of it and on my wife wrist the fit is amazing, for my wrist is a bit on the small size so is a no go for me. Shame cos is such a nice watch.

I wish Rolex would bring back a Air King like this in the size of the current one and different colors.

The „Explorer“-look dial just looks so perfect and clean.

I used to have this exact watch. I had the dial swapped out at Rolex St James Sq for a blue, which really made it more ‘for me’. But, I just couldn’t get on with the small hands. Even the 34mm oyster perpetual and the older 14200 had a larger set. Of course Rolex wouldn’t change them. . . .  I ended up moving it on. It was my first Rolly though. Soft spot!

I sold it with the Salmon and still have the blue dial. 👌🏻

Absolutely on point there! I went into a showroom just the other day to try out a 37mm YM and was surprised to find it's got a smaller bracelet than the 34mm AK 😮

Yeh, got to say it does look out of place on a larger wrist. As mentioned, many combinations of the OP to choose from and the choice of 41mm, there's something for everyone.

Can't agree more with you on this.. the new AK hasn't grown on me 😕
