Watch suggestions for a special 14 year old girl! Help!

My daughter is set to move from grade school to high school. She’s worked hard and I wanted to get her a nice watch. “Nice” is defined as something that will last. Something that she can wear fairly often, not just when she dresses up. Price is under $200. I don’t even own a $200 watch myself!

The pic I posted are the ones I’ve found so far.

Wants:

Colors: gold or silver…she’s not fond of rose gold.

Dial: pearl, white, or possibly the right shade of blue. Dial Size: low to mid 30mm

Band: prefer one that she can swap bands and dress down / up as wanted.

Movement: Quartz might be preferred.

I’ve searched brands I’m more familiar with like Seiko, Citizen, Tissot. Avoiding brands under the Fossil umbrella. Maybe you guys have some other suggestions!

And…go!

I used to have my daughter spend the time looking at the watches with me to help her develop her design preferences. It was great father/daughter time together.

Good luck!

Finding a specific color in stock can be tricky, but it’s a fun alternative and built to take a beating. https://www.scurfawatches.com/product/top-side-crew-stainless-steel-pink-dial-ladies/

Maybe a Dugena or Bulova?

I think small rectangular watches are really nice for women.

That's is what being a good dad is about. But I would advise you to let her pick herself. Set the scene, tell her you are proud, show her a couple of styles. Not just individual watches but styles and tell her she can choose. Then if you know the style she likes, make it a bonding experience and go on the hunt for a watch within budget together! It might surprise you what she actually ends up with and really likes 👍

Let me play devil's advocate: why one watch? I love vintage watches and vintage ladies watches are cheap as chips, because most aren't particularly interesting and very few women are into collecting. For 200 USD you can get her a Universal Genève or a Tissot or two. Should you do that? Hell no. I know you said quartz is preferred, but maybe a decent hand-wound watch wouldn't be too out of pocket. I remember a story from my watchmaker, where he was at some event earlier this year when he saw a young girl (maybe fifteen or sixteen) looking at a small ladies cocktail watch and talking to the seller. Both of them thought that the watch needed a new battery or some work done and she was about to put it down and move on when he asked her for the watch and explained how to wind it up. She was delighted and walked away with a decent vintage Swiss watch for 20 ZAR (less than 2 USD) if I remember correctly.

Vintage is by no means for everyone, so find out about her style first and make sure that you don't end up with a lemon. Seiko made wonderful hi-beat ladies watches. For your budget you vould get some pretty good Omegas too. Here's one of my vintage watches which is unisex in all senses of the word. I can wear it and look just as good as a lady wearing it.

Vintage watches can be a minefield, but maybe she's like a fourteen-year-old me: a die-hard lover of vintage stuff, but without knowing it.

And shout-out to you for choosing to be a wonderful father!

I like the Seiko mother of pearl you picked

These are awesome….as someone that is fairly new to this hobby I wasn’t very familiar with them. They seem to offer some nice value for your money! I might look at one of them for myself!

Thanks for the suggestions! I tried talking with her about helping me pick last week. She was excited about a new watch but really gave me the impression that she wanted to be surprised. I did pull up that pic with all of my ideas and she did give me good feedback. Ultimately the surprise of which one intrigues her more than picking it herself.

Appreciate the time you took to reply! I went down an eBay rabbit hole looking at vintage because of your comment. Found some cool watches! In the end, with my budget and low level of experience with vintage watches, it really scared me. Knowing my luck I’d buy one then have to pay a shop lots more to fix my bad purchase. If I were more watch savvy and handy with tinkering, I do believe you can get some awesome deals out there!
